In 1893, Emile Durkheim developed the idea of collective consciousness: the shared beliefs, values and moral attitudes that help bind a community together.
You can see it in small ways. You know to step aside on a stairwell, offer to help someone with their shopping, or look after someone if they’re sick.
This is to a lot of people “how they were raised”, but those things only really work collectively when enough of us share an understanding of how we’re supposed to behave towards one another. And that predictability is part of the glue. It’s why you look after your neighbour, and they look after you.
And that’s how community is built. By looking out for each other.
