South London comrades are helping to organise a Socialist Walking Tour: the 1926 General Strike in Southwark on Thursday 13 July.
We are meting at Tooley Street entrance to London Bridge Railway Station (opposite Hays Galleria), 6.30pm, Thursday 13 July. Register on Eventbrite: bit.ly/iff-1926
This walk will introduce participants to the events of the 1926 General Strike, and present a picture of how this tremendous working-class played out in and around Elephant and Castle in Southwark, south London.
We’ll also look at some of the rich history of struggle in the area, including: the movement for housing reform between the wars, the 1937 “Battle for Bermondsey”, a street battle with fascists, the 1911 Bermondsey Uprising, and organisation of the Independent Labour Party and Communist Party. We'll look at the remains of industrial architecture in the area, as well as buildings still standing which have a connection to the strike.
