Fire Union Warns Edinburgh and East Scotland ‘Left Exposed’ Amid Growing Concerns Over Proposed Service Cuts
The Fire Brigades Union has raised fresh concerns over proposed cuts to fire services across Edinburgh and Scotland, warning that frontline emergency cover is already stretched to its limits.
Union representatives pointed to a major incident at Torduff Reservoir on Thursday evening, where at approximately 7:30pm, appliances from Sighthill, Crewe Toll, Tollcross, Marionville, Macdonald Road and Musselburgh were all committed to tackling a fire in the open.
The incident has reignited questions over resilience and emergency cover across Edinburgh and the Lothians, with union officials asking what resources remained available should another major emergency have occurred at the same time.
Concerns have also been raised over the continued loss of second appliances from stations, leaving fewer fire engines available to respond to simultaneous incidents. Remaining crews would likely have relied on support from neighbouring areas, potentially leaving communities elsewhere without local cover and increasing response times.
The union argues that the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is already operating with an ultra-lean model and says further reductions would place public safety at risk.
“Services have already been stripped to the bone,” representatives said, warning that proposals to reduce pump numbers and cut full-time availability across the East of Scotland are increasingly exposing weaknesses in resilience.
The union is calling on decision-makers, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service board and the Scottish Government to intervene and ensure the service receives sufficient funding to meet the demands placed upon it.
As discussions over future resources continue, firefighters warn that every delay in addressing staffing and appliance levels risks leaving communities more vulnerable during major incidents.
The evidence is clear, Lives are potentially going to be lost due to the proposed cuts
