In April CBS News acquired a specially adapted Model Mountain topographic relief of the Eiger. The scale model was to be used during a CBS News broadcast of a dramatic attempt to ski down and parachute off the mountain. Lack of snow curtailed that attempt, but didn't stop this base jump!

In January Model Mountain sculptor Nige Emery was delighted to be asked to produce a topographical relief model for the RAF Search and Rescue at RAF Valley in North Wales.
The model, measuring 1m x 1m, was constructed in 2 weeks and delivered to the RAF at the end of February, along with 3 scale models of Sea King helicopters purchased from a supplier.

An urgent request for something "pointy and snowy" were the two main criteria for this particular model. Designed for "Art of England" editor Joanna Gray, the 25 cm model was to be a present for a young son with an interest in geology and was constructed and delivered within a week in time for Xmas.

Loosely based on the Matterhorn in Switzerland, the model features a mixture of rock, snow and ice, including a glacier and a meltwater stream running into Alpine meadows.

A busy few months surveying and the various projects progressing very well around the world. Locations included the Pyrenees, Ireland and Antarctica, where I also did some climate change research to tie in with my masters studies at Exeter Uni.

In 1949 the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act was passed and the first UK National Parks were designated in 1951. Dartmoor was designated in October that year, the fourth area of land in the UK to receive National Park Status. This year Dartmoor National Park celebrates its 60th year.
