Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital has successfully performed the first Harmony™️Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve implantation in the North West of England.

This landmark procedure represents an important advancement in the treatment of selected patients with congenital heart disease, offering a minimally invasive alternative to repeat open-heart surgery.

The procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary team including consultants Dr Salim Jivanji, Dr Arvind Balaji and Dr Shreesha Maiya, together with fellow Dr Mohamed Saber, supported by specialist nursing, imaging, anaesthetic and catheter laboratory teams.

This achievement reflects LHCH's ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence in congenital and structural heart interventions, helping to expand access to cutting-edge treatments for patients across the region. 👏

Liverpool Women’s has introduced a new specialist procedure to help reduce the risk of late miscarriage and premature birth.

The keyhole surgery, called LAP TAC, places a stitch high around the cervix to help keep it closed during pregnancy. It’s usually done before pregnancy or in the early stages.

This treatment was previously only available in Manchester, but is now offered locally at Liverpool Women’s, meaning patients can access expert care closer to home.

The team completed their first three procedures successfully, with support from Kenneth Ma, Consultant Gynaecologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Marwa Fakhreldin, Consultant in Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine, said: “This is an important milestone for women across our region, patients can now receive highly specialised care closer to home, supported by our clinical team.”

Say hello to Chris and Sue, our trolley superstars at Aintree University Hospital 🤩

They pair are just two of our volunteers who bring the little things that make a big difference- like newspapers, phone chargers and a few sweet treats - straight to patients’ bedsides.

For those who can’t get to the shops or don’t have visitors, Chris and Sue always a welcome sight ❤️

Thanks to our Volunteers and Fundraising teams, this brilliant service is coming to more of our hospitals very soon.

Emily Naylor, Volunteers Manager, said: “I can’t thank our volunteers enough for the time and kindness they give. Services like this simply wouldn’t exist without them.” 🙌

“We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved so far, and we will continue working towards a healthier and more sustainable future for our communities.” 💚

What started as a simple way to keep busy during retirement has grown into a deeply rewarding experience for 72-year-old Colin Dutton, whose quiet dedication as a volunteer has brought comfort and companionship to countless end-of-life patients at Aintree University Hospital 💙

This National Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June) we spoke to him about the importance of his role and what his seven years as a volunteer have taught him.

“Unfortunately, a lot of our elderly patients don’t have family, or their relatives live some distance from the hospital meaning that they are without their loved ones when they pass away. Most of the time, patients that I support are asleep, but I still talk and play music to them as I know hearing is the last remaining sense that they possess before they pass. I never want a patient to feel like they're alone so, when possible, I place my hand on their arm when talking to them.” 🫶

Colin is one of 172 volunteers at Aintree who take on a variety of roles from wayfinding and chaplaincy support, to the end-of-life companionship service.

About volunteering, Colin said: “I like being able to help people in their final moments. Being an end-of-life companion has taught me that there is more good in the world than bad. Families and staff are always complimentary and welcoming and my intention is to carry on volunteering at Aintree in the years to come.” ☺️
