St Vincent's Centre is making a real difference for vulnerable individuals and families across Birkenhead.

Through its Food Club, residents can access affordable food and everyday essentials, helping household budgets go further while tackling food poverty.

The project also offers cooking sessions, creative upcycling activities and community gardening opportunities, helping people build confidence, develop new skills and connect with others. 🍲🎨🌿

St Vincent's is just one of the fantastic projects being delivered through our Β£1.6m National Lottery-funded Thriving Communities programme, supporting people and communities across Wirral πŸ’š

Recovery is possible, recovery is beautiful and there is a better life waiting on the other side of addiction." πŸ’œ

In November 2024, local musician Cal Ruddy hit what he describes as rock bottom after being hospitalised for the fifth time in a year because of alcohol dependency.

Today, he's nearly two years alcohol-free, creating music, writing songs and using his experiences to inspire others.

Cal says recovery has given him "a fresh new chapter in my life", helping him become happier, healthier and more creative than ever before.
Now he's bringing that story, and his music, to Recovery Fest 2026, where he'll be performing live at 3.30pm on the 10th of September in Birkenhead Market.

Speaking about the event, Cal said:
"Music and songwriting has been a therapeutic way for me to navigate my recovery journey. I'm incredibly happy to be involved in this wonderful community event here on the Wirral, give back to services that have helped me along the way and make a difference to people no matter what stage they're at.

Quitting drinking has allowed me the freedom to be my authentic self without the mask of alcohol."

Recovery Fest is a day to celebrate the people, stories and communities that show addiction doesn't have to define someone's future.
Whether you're making changes in your own life, supporting someone else, or simply want to learn more, everyone is welcome.

πŸ“šπŸ’– Dolly Parton's legacy extends far beyond music and across Wirral.

Through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, thousands of local children have received free books from birth to age five, helping to build early language, communication and reading skills while inspiring a lifelong love of books.

The programme supports five communities across Wirral and has made a real difference for local families, with 94% of parents saying they feel more confident supporting their child's communication and language development.

πŸ’¬ "The programme is brilliant! My twins love the books, it's really nice they get one each as well, as they love to fight over books, but they don't have to when we are reading Dolly's books."

Thank you, Dolly, for helping children and families discover the joy of reading. πŸ“–βœ¨

We're proud to share that Wirral Cemeteries and Crematorium Service has been awarded a Gold Standard industry award.

Achieving a score of over 90%, the award recognises excellence in customer care and providing clear, accessible information for families.

It's a fantastic achievement and a reflection of the dedication and hard work of the team. πŸ‘

πŸ’¬ ”This recognition is testament to the compassionate, caring and professional bereavement service that each member of staff offer all year round. We want to assure residents that they will be given the highest quality and most dignified support during such a difficult period of their lives.”

Our Annual Household Canvass is underway πŸ“’

We're asking residents to check that the information we hold on the electoral register is correct, helping to ensure everyone remains registered and able to vote in future elections.

βœ… Responded to our email? Great. No paper form will be sent.

πŸ“¬ If we don't have an email address for your property, or you haven't responded to our email, our canvassing team are currently out and about across the borough delivering paper forms to households.

A quick response helps ensure you stay registered and don't miss out on your opportunity to vote.

The Red Ensign has been raised at Wallasey Town Hall to mark Merchant Navy Day and honour the men and women who serve in the UK's merchant fleet. βš“

The Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Mary Jordan, was joined by representatives from Stena Line and the Naval AttachΓ© at the Peruvian Embassy in London, for the flag-raising ceremony.

Merchant Navy Day recognises the vital contribution merchant seafarers make to our economy, security and international trade, while also remembering those who lost their lives in service during times of conflict.

As a borough with a proud maritime heritage, Wirral continues to play an important role in supporting the industries and people that keep our nation connected.

πŸŽ‰ Another milestone for Wirral Waters!

The Hythe, a landmark office building at Wirral Waters, is now fully occupied after the final remaining office space was let to Aslan Labs Management Ltd. This marks the first time the building has reached full occupancy since it was built in 2020.

Why did Aslan Labs choose The Hythe?

πŸ’¬ Aslan Labs Group founder and managing director Philip Plaatjies:

β€œLiverpool city centre simply didn’t have the kind of space we were looking for. The Hythe gave us the grandeur we wanted, combined with an open-plan, industrial feel that allowed us to create something far more bespoke.”

It's another positive step for Wirral Waters, bringing investment, innovation and new opportunities to Birkenhead. πŸš€

After a health scare, Kevin decided it was time for a change.

The Covid-19 pandemic had taken a toll on his physical health, confidence and wellbeing. But joining an Invigor8 We Are Undefeatable gym membership helped him take the first step towards a healthier lifestyle:

πŸ—£οΈ β€œI lost a stone in five weeks – I didn’t expect that! Exercising has made me so much more positive. I’m driven and waking up ready to seize the day.”

As well as improving his health, Kevin has made new friends at Guinea Gap Leisure Centre.

πŸ’¬ β€œThis gym is really friendly and has a community feel.”

Invigor8 We Are Undefeatable memberships are just Β£16 a month for up to 3 months and available by referral from a health practitioner. Find out more on the Active Wirral website.
