Freedom Hunters for Tamils calls for a full, independent, transparent, and internationally credible investigation into the Easter Sunday attacks and all serious human rights violations that have been alleged in Sri Lanka over the past decades.

The recent reports concerning the detention and questioning of retired Major General Suresh Salley have renewed public debate about accountability, justice, and the rights of victims. Survivors, victims' families, and civil society groups continue to seek answers regarding allegations of torture, enforced disappearances, political violence, attacks on journalists, and other unresolved abuses.

We urge the Sri Lankan authorities to ensure that all allegations of serious human rights violations are investigated thoroughly, independently, and without political interference. No individual, regardless of military rank, political position, or influence, should be above the law.

We also call for former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to be subject to the same standards of accountability as any other individual. Long-standing allegations relating to extrajudicial killings, torture, enforced disappearances, abuses during the civil war, and other human rights violations affecting Tamils, Muslims, and Sinhalese communities must be examined through credible legal processes and independent investigations.

Freedom Hunters for Tamils further urges the United Kingdom, the United States, the United Nations, and the wider international community to support impartial investigations and accountability mechanisms to ensure justice for all victims.

Justice must be based on truth, evidence, due process, and accountability. Victims deserve answers. Families deserve closure. Sri Lanka deserves justice.

Justice delayed is justice denied.

One Country, Two Laws.

When Sinhalese singers honour fallen soldiers, they are celebrated as patriots.

When Tamils remember their dead relatives and loved ones who perished during the war, they are treated as terrorists.

How can there be reconciliation when remembrance is allowed for one community but criminalised for another?

The arrest of 24-year-old Kilinochchi musician Ganesh Kumar Sankeethan under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) for releasing a song commemorating those who died in the North is a shocking example of this double standard.

A young artist used music to express grief and remembrance. Instead of protecting freedom of expression, the state responded with arrest, detention, and accusations under a law that has been repeatedly criticised by international human rights organisations.

Remembering the dead is not terrorism.

Grieving is not terrorism.

Singing about loss is not terrorism.

If one community can openly honour its war heroes while another is punished for mourning its dead, then equality before the law does not exist.

This unequal treatment is precisely why many Tamils continue to feel that they cannot live with dignity, justice, and security under the current system. Peace cannot be built on selective memory, selective justice, and selective freedom.

True reconciliation begins when every family has the same right to remember their loved ones, regardless of ethnicity, politics, or which side of the war they came from.

One country cannot survive with two laws.

The arrest of a Buddhist monk in Kandy over the alleged abuse of a 15-year-old girl, and the separate arrest of a maulavi over the alleged abuse of a 14-year-old girl, are deeply disturbing.

Child abuse has no religion, no ethnicity, and no political affiliation. Every allegation involving the abuse of a child must be investigated thoroughly, independently and without fear or favour.

For too long, many Sri Lankans have questioned whether influential individuals, including some religious figures, receive protection or special treatment while victims struggle to obtain justice. Public trust can only be restored when the law is applied equally to everyone, regardless of their status, position or connections.

The priority must always be the protection of children, support for victims, and accountability for offenders. No religious robe, title, or political influence should ever place anyone above the law.

Justice must be swift, transparent and impartial.

Freedom Hunters for Tamils Statement

We are deeply saddened and concerned by the fatal shooting of a Tamil man by French police in Bobigny, France, on 30 May 2026. Reports indicate that the deceased had been suffering from long-term mental health difficulties.

Freedom Hunters for Tamils strongly condemns any unnecessary or disproportionate use of force and calls for a full, transparent, and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic death.

Every human life has value. Incidents involving individuals experiencing mental health crises require the highest standards of care, restraint, and accountability. The family of the deceased and the wider Tamil community deserve clear answers about what happened and whether all appropriate measures were taken before lethal force was used.

We call upon the French authorities to ensure that this case is investigated impartially and thoroughly, and that justice is delivered in accordance with the rule of law. Accountability and transparency are essential to maintaining public trust and protecting human rights.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the family, friends, and all those affected by this tragedy.

Freedom Hunters for Tamils have organised a remembrance day on 18 May 2026 in front of the Sri Lankan High Commission in London.

Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day stands as a solemn occasion to honour and remember the tens of thousands of innocent Tamil civilians who lost their lives during the final stages of the war in Mullivaikkal in May 2009.

It is a day of reflection, mourning, and collective remembrance of the immense suffering endured by the Tamil people, while also serving as a call for justice, truth, and accountability. As we gather in remembrance, we pay tribute to those who perished, stand in solidarity with survivors and their families, and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that such atrocities are never forgotten or repeated. Mullivaikkal remains a powerful symbol of resilience, memory, and the ongoing struggle for dignity and justice.
