Trigger warning...

A few weeks ago, three of our great tit babies flew the nest! We were delighted and let them use our garden undisturbed as we watched them learn to fly. One of the fledglings seemed to be slow with his learning despite his parents cheering it all day long, and bringing food throughout the day. When we went to sleep that night, he was still hopping around in the garden flying to and from relatively low branches.

Sadly, we found his little body in the garden the next day 😭. Apparently it's a tough world out there as around 50% of juveniles die in the first few weeks after leaving the nest. The great t**s have an average lifespan of about 3 years!

A few days later we saw another one of the fledglings in a tree nearby with it's tufty feathers, it seemed to be doing well! So we are keeping our fingers crossed for the rest of the flock... 🤞🤞🤞🪶

Upcoming wild writing session Waresley Park Estate

Last chance to join me at Waresley Park tomorrow at 10am for the first wild writing session - Celebrate and Energise

We'll focus on the beauty and abundance of wildflowers and tree blossom around us this month, exploring ways that flowers appeal to our senses and how we can capture that energy in our writing.

Sessions on birds and trees too in the upcoming weeks...

A quick guide to dealing with Christmas waste

🎄 Christmas is over… but what about the waste? ♻️

If you’re clearing out old decorations, cards and packaging, here’s a quick guide from on recycling your Christmas items correctly.

🚮 Extra recycling
Any additional recycling can be placed next to your recycling bin in a cardboard or plastic box before 6.30am on your collection day, or taken to your nearest recycling centre.

Common Christmas items:

🎁 Wrapping paper
• Plain paper (no foil/glitter): blue-lidded bin
• Foil, glitter or plastic coating: purple-lidded bin

💌 Christmas cards
• No glitter or decorations: blue-lidded bin
• With glitter, foil or trimmings: purple-lidded bin

🎄 Christmas trees
• Real trees: garden waste subscribers can place them next to the brown bin, or take to a recycling centre
• Artificial trees: donate if reusable, or take to a recycling centre

✨ Decorations & lights
• Baubles & tinsel: donate if reusable, otherwise purple-lidded bin
• Christmas lights & electrical items: donate, or take to a recycling centre / electrical waste drop-off

🥫 Food & packaging
• Foil & foil trays (clean): black-lidded mixed recycling
• Plastic sweet tubs & biscuit tins: black-lidded mixed recycling
• Food waste: food caddy

🔋 Batteries
Do not put batteries in any bin — take them to a recycling centre or a supermarket battery collection point.

You can also download the North Herts Council app and check the Recycling information section for help anytime.

Looking for mandarin ducks locally!

Does anyone know if, locally, there are any mandarin ducks, either living wild or as pets?
We've had one brought in, and would quite like to return it to its own kind.
If you think it may be yours, please state gender and approximate location.
Generic pic added, not the actual casualty.

Supporting the birds this winter...

❄️ Winter can be tough on our feathered friends!
But with a few simple pantry staples, you can help wild birds make it through the coldest months.

From oats to unsalted peanuts, there are plenty of easy ways to give them the extra nutrition they need when natural food is hard to find.

Even cooked rice, soaked dog kibble, or baked potatoes can make a big difference!
Put out some bird-friendly foods and watch your garden come alive with grateful little visitors.

🐦💙 Thank you for caring!
