It is baby chough season in Cornwall . Walkers and visitors on the coastal path should always remember they are walking near hidden nest sites of the very rare Cornish chough. Well I lost by 527 votes ! 1282:755 As many of you know it was a two horse race in the end as the Liberals , Labour and the Greens did not stand in my district and the left of centre votes went to my opponent Cllr Loveday Jenkin . Ce la vie !

BUT the good news is we have won a majority control of the Cornwall Council as we hoped .

So thank you to all those who voted for me and for a bright new future at Cornwall Council ...... NOW under new management .

Roger and out

People I have met on my campaign have been asking about my time at the BBC . In 1981 financial phone-in’s , so common today , were virtually unheard of except occasionally on the national Radio 4 Money Box Programme. The format was rather heavy and technical and certainly not much fun to listen to . So I set out to change that . I created the concept of a light-hearted 20 mins chat between me and the presenter about a chosen financial subject and then we opened up the lines to 40 mins of questions. It was risky radio because we did not know if we would get any questions ! So I prepared another 40 minutes of chat and invented some questions just in case the lines proved silent .Luckily they rarely proved to be so. I then provided a fact sheet after the programme if the listener sent in a stamped addressed envelope . When I went to BBC Radio Wales in Cardiff I little realised when I offered a fact sheet after the programme that it was in fact a national UK station and I got over 800 requests and a mail bag of other financial questions ! The Government was keen to promote wider share ownership in those days , something you never hear them say today !

The format was taken up by many BBC local radio stations across the UK ( Including BBC Radio Cornwall ) in the mid 1980’s and 19990’s and then at TVAM with Anne Diamond and Nick Owen ( 1985-6). I became very busy criss-crossing the country until I decided to stop in 2008 just before the crash .

39 Ways to save the Planet - BBC Radio 4

For those of you interested in climate change and what we all can do in small ways to save our planet ,I recommend the new series on BBC Radio 4 called “39 ways to save the planet”. It is full of fascinating and helpful information . It is good to have a programme ( together with Farming Today ) worth the licence fee which I think is too expensive for many on low incomes .
As a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society since 1996 I am pleased my Society has been a major contributor to this excellent new radio series . I have been interested in environmental issues since I was a law student in London in the 1970’s and was involved in several planning enquiries as a young barrister. If you were hoping for a Green Party candidate in this Election you will be disappointed as no one decided to stand in our large rural area. Be assured I am a very Green Tory !

BBC Radio 4 Farming Today
This is one of my favourite BBC Radio 4 programmes at 5.45am whilst I am preparing my morning cup of tea . This has been my early morning routine for many years .As a countryman at heart I have learned so much from the programme which has covered many interesting subjects over the years. Their reporting team is full of experts .This week they have been focusing on Soil Quality . We tend to forget that it stores carbon, but it has been “a Cinderella subject” for many years according to Professor Bridget Emmett who is the Soil Lead at the Centre of Ecology and Hydrology , which has been reporting on UK soil quality since 1978. In the new English Environmental Land Management Scheme (ELM) farmers will be paid to look after their soil for all our benefit . UK soil has suffered some degradation in recent years. Previously under the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy ( known as the CAP) farmers concentrated on avoiding soil erosion and improving organic matter, but this did not go far enough . It was well-intentioned but not properly monitored . Professor Emmett says : “ Soil is the capital which farmers base everything on and it needs a regular M O T on it , just like our cars . A Soil MOT is decided on set indicators for example, level of organic matter, the Ph levels ,soil structure and acidification etc. Samples should be taken and analysed regularly . Increased compaction and acidification are not good and should be avoided .” In our own gardens do not forget to let your compost bin connect properly with the soil so the worms can do their magic. My bins produce hundreds of new worms each year .If you are interested do listen on BBC Radio 4 Sounds catch up .

Well, my Election Campaign is in full swing . Everyone should now have had my Election brochure . I have 2871 households in my district of about 100 square miles . If you haven’t got one let me know on email to [email protected] or text me on 07881 378298 . If you want a window poster let me know . It is a straight choice this year between myself and the existing Mebyon Kernow Councillor Loveday Jenkin , whose majority I reduced last time in 2017 to just 25 ! She continues to block any of my campaign literature on the Crowan & Wendron Community page despite regular mentions about herself. Guess who controls the site? She does ! I offer you a fresh approach for our area as she has been on the Council for many years .

I have been pleased to meet many new Conservatives on the doorstep. Most people seem pleased with the Government’s Covid vaccine roll-out programme. Yesterday I had a staunch Labour trade unionist voter offer me his support as there is no Labour,Green or Liberal candidate this year . He kindly said “ Having met you it is the person that counts” – which was very reassuring !

I am a Councillor at Crowan Parish Council. I have lived in the area since 1986 first in Marazion, and then in Leedstown since 2000. I set up a business in Truro from 1990-2003 employing 23 people. I designed and then took part in the first financial advice phone-in series on BBC Radio Cornwall with Tim Hubbard from 1986-1992. I have traced my mother’s Cornish ancestors back to a marriage in 1588, the year of the Spanish Armada. Some of you may remember me as I stood last time in May 2017 against the very long- standing Cllr. Jenkin and reduced her majority from 461 to 25!

“A new broom is often a good thing.” As one local resident said to me recently “You can offer a new perspective on our area. It is time for a change!”. Remember if you vote for an Independent councillor like Cllr Jenkin you are, in effect, supporting the high spending Liberal Democrat Coalition Council. Unlike them, we Conservatives never forget that we are spending your hard-earned money! So, voting Conservative NOW is in YOUR best interests.

🏡 Better affordable housing
I have long held the view that we should insist on better quality affordable housing by encouraging better design and functionality with more energy efficiency. The estates should blend into our villages and look like they belong to their community.

🏬 Supporting local businesses
Some of our local businesses have suffered a lot during the Covid-19 crisis, others have prospered. We should not forget them when the pandemic crisis is over. Local businesses are owned by our neighbours, not multinational companies, and deserve our loyalty.

🌳 Protecting our environment
There are lots of small ways we can all help to help our planet which is moving fast
towards a climate emergency. Better insulation, green energy, soil improvement, solar panels, electric cars, wind turbines, geothermal heating, tree planting & rewilding - all these will help our damaged biodiversity.
