These beautiful stone stairs leading up to the abbot's chamber at Muchelney have been worn down by the passage of many feet over the centuries. Why not walk in the footsteps of the monks yourself and explore one of the oldest monasteries in Somerset?

The abbey and its grounds are open from 10am to 4pm this weekend and our knowledgeable volunteer tour guides will be offering tours of the whole site at 10.30am and 12pm.

We're a litte late for World Bee Day.. but has anyone heard the buzz? 🐝

The Bumblebee Conservation Trust is launching a new conservation project 'Save Our Shrills (SOS): Somerset', to protect one of our rarest bumblebees, the Shrill Carder Bee.
🌱Over the next three years SOS: Somerset will restore wildflower-rich areas and fragmented landscapes to give the species space to recover.

And we are going to be getting involved here at Muchelney, making sure that our meadows can provide the best habitat for this very special bumblebee to thrive.

To find out more about the project, including how to get involved, visit:

At English Heritage we like to be prepared for every eventuality.
Which is why our local volunteers take part in salvage training, so they are ready to respond to a call to action in an emergency. It's just one of the ways that our volunteers at Muchelney Abbey contribute to keeping our heritage safe for future generations.

Though only part of the abbey buildings at Muchelney survived Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries, the remains of the foundations are still visible.
🪄Why not take advantage of a guided tour of the grounds this weekend and let one of our knowledgeable volunteers bring the stones back to life?
Tours can be booked on our website at https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/muchelney-abbey/

This spectacular wooden 'settle' in the Abbot's chambers has survived intact for over 500 years. It spans the entire width of the room and is covered with intricately carved linenfold panelling.
Looking after it is quite a challenge and it takes our volunteers hours to dust, wax and polish it until it shines. ✨
🐝As you walk up the stairs, the scent of beeswax fills the air, much as it would have done centuries ago.

The Church of St Peter and St Paul stands on the north side of the Abbey ruins. This was never part of the monastery but served as the parish church for the local villagers.
Monthly communion services are still held here on the first Sunday of every month and it is also open to visitors daily from 10am to 4pm. It's well worth a visit while you are exploring the Abbey grounds.
When you step inside the church be sure to look up, as the ceiling has some surprising features.

It's hard to believe just how old this site is! 🤯 🕍
What remains of Muchelney Abbey dates back to the 10th Century - when the levels were an island.

What question would you ask the walls, if they could talk? 💬
