Port of London Authority and Thames Water are down on the foreshore at St Paul's Boys' School (near Hammersmith Bridge) tackling the wet wipe mountain as part of the PLA Clean Thames Plan. Huge thank you to Putney Tidy Towpath , Barnes Tidy Towpath and the many other local community groups that have tirelessly pursued this issue over the last several years. And a big thank you to the PLA and Thames Water for taking action. These works are scheduled from 6th to 28th August and stewards will be on site to minimise disruption to the use of the towpath.

🌊🦭 Positive News for the Thames! Thousands of Seals Counted in the Thames Estuary 🦭🌊

A recent survey by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) has recorded nearly 3,600 seals in the Greater Thames Estuary, showing that this vital habitat remains healthy! Partnering with RAF Shawbury helicopter pilots, ZSL conservationists counted 599 harbour seals and 2,988 grey seals, highlighting the Thames as a thriving home for these important predators.

According to ZSL conservationist Hannah McCormick, “A flourishing ecosystem has enough food, shelter and space for all of its inhabitants.” While the results are promising, McCormick also warns that plastic and sewage pollution still pose a serious threat to the wildlife here. She urges everyone to avoid littering and to call for stronger action on pollution to protect our rivers and estuaries. ♻️💧

The survey results are an encouraging sign of recovery, as UK seal populations have rebounded since the early 2000s. Let’s continue to prioritise the health of our waterways and protect the biodiversity within them! 🐟💙

Mudlarking: Uncovering London’s Hidden History

Mudlarking is a historic tradition in London where individuals search the riverbed of the Thames for archaeological treasures. This practice dates back to the 19th century and has evolved into a popular hobby for those interested in the city’s rich heritage.

Notable finds include the Battersea Shield and the Waterloo Helmet, both of which are preserved at the British Museum. More commonly, mudlarkers discover clay pipes, fragments of tile, and old coins.

To participate in mudlarking, individuals must obtain a Thames foreshore permit from the Port of London Authority. This permit is essential for legal exploration of the riverbanks and helps protect the historical significance of the site.

For more information and to apply for your permit, please visit: https://pla.co.uk/thames-foreshore-permits.
