NEW: Fresh questions for the deputy leader of Reform after investigation reveals he failed to pay almost £100,000 in tax, benefitting his investment firm…

…which then gave big donations to Reform UK.

This isn’t going away.

Very busy day in the constituency today but managed to squeeze in soup at Cafe West in Workington in between meetings and visits! Love the work they do to support people into employment.

I’ve been asking Westmorland and Furness Council and National Highways to work together more effectively to find a solution on the current disgraceful levels of litter on the A590 particularly around the Dalton Bypass.

Not only does it look terrible but it’s an accident waiting to happen, and many people have been in contact with me to express their concerns.

The responsibility for clearing the verges sits with the local authority but it does need close coordination with National Highways and I have been working to support that.

I’m pleased that the council is now arranging for contractors to clear sections of the road as a short-term fix but we need a long term strategy including prevention work to identify and prosecute the offenders who are causing the problem in the first place. I’m calling on the council to share their plan for how they are going to keep the A590 clear of rubbish, so that we can keep track of progress.

I’ve lived in this area my whole life, and I think we’ve got the most beautiful and underrated coastline in the country! I’m glad that the national Tourism body, VisitEngland, has now officially supported that view!

Last week I welcomed senior directors from VisitEngland to our beautiful part of the world ahead of the launch of their latest marketing campaign.

The £1 million funded pilot campaign, ‘All on England’s North West Coast’, will promote the Cumbrian coast as a destination for domestic tourists highlighting destinations, attractions, experiences and accommodation providers in our area.

I invited Visit England here to shout about what we have to offer and to introduce them to representatives from local tourism businesses. We talked about the diversity of what our coast can offer from Ulverston right up to Ravenglass and beyond. I’m delighted that Barrow-in-Furness, Silecroft, Ravenglass and Muncaster Castle will be specifically highlighted in the campaign and that the campaign will be used to benefit tourism along the whole coast.

I am keen to see this pilot campaign expanded to deliver even more marketing activity for our tourism sector in the future.
