πŸ” Sunday species spotting in the woods πŸ”Ž

Last weekend we hosted Chill Wood's first-ever bioblitz, as part of the City Nature Challenge. In this event, cities from around the world compete to map the most species onto the iNaturalist app, and our team of 12 volunteers did their bit for Bristol πŸ’ͺ

David Hanks of Frampton Cotterell Parish Council led us on the trail of a huge range of biodiversity, including:

🌿 Edible and medicinal plants
🌸 Ancient woodland indicator flowers
πŸͺ² Superhero composting beetles
πŸͺœ Cave-clinging climbers

Check the photos in this post for a small selection of the species we found. If you go down to the woods this bank holiday, why not download iNaturalist and see what you can see?

πŸ“’ We are excited to invite you to join us for a free guided nature walk and bioblitz around Chill Wood! 🌳

David Hanks, Frampton Cotterell Parish Council’s Nature Officer, will be guiding us around Chill Wood to observe and record plants, animals and fungi πŸ¦β€β¬›πŸŒ·πŸ›πŸ„

πŸ“Š Our walk is part of the City Nature Challenge, an annual global event that brings together communities, scientists and land managers to document the wild species living in and around our cities. The aim is simple but powerful: by finding and recording the nature around us, we can better study and protect it.

πŸ—“ We will meet at 10am at Tubbs Bottom Dam on Sunday 26th April.

🌍 Every sighting counts, and together we will be contributing Chill Wood’s wildlife to a worldwide dataset. We look forward to seeing you there!

πŸŽ‰ Exciting News!! πŸ¦β€β¬›

has launched its latest citizen-science survey on which birds visit greenspaces… and Chill Wood is on the project map! πŸ™Œ

πŸ“ Sign up to their Birds in Greenspaces survey at https://www.bto.org/greenspaces

🌳 Visit Chill Wood and other local greenspaces listed on the project map, then simply record which birds you see and how many!

πŸ’« Data collected by you will help the BTO understand just how important greenspaces are for birds, and people, shaping future management practices.

This interactive survey is open to ALL skill levels and ages - so get out there and help us show off this amazing habitat! β˜€οΈ

Veteran trees, raspberry apple cake, and sapling mulch: what do they have in common?
The answer is us - the community! β˜€οΈ

A fantastic turn out on Sunday saw volunteers, led by Arb professional Deb, taken on a tour of the wood where Lindsay had arranged for us to register our most notable veteran and ancient trees on the Ancient Tree Inventory πŸ“πŸŒ³

Over half of our saplings had mulch applied - we were excited to see fresh green shoots of Wild Service Tree, Wild Cherry and Hawthorn (No Oak yet πŸƒ)

πŸ„ 🌷 David Hanks also kindly offered to conduct regular botanical surveys in the woodland and surrounding area to inform our ongoing species recording as part of our biodiversity action plan πŸ™ŒπŸ»

🧹 Budding volunteers took care of sweeping the steps in the woodland, clearing debris and making it safer.

Oh, and we had cake. Thanks to our star bakers Sonya and Lindsay! 🌟 (How were they still warm?!)

🌳 10 New Wild Service Trees for Chill Wood! πŸ’ͺ🏻

Despite the forecast, the community turned up today and helped plant pot-grown Wild Service Trees, from , in Chill Wood where our existing ones stand strong.

We hope this planting effort helps bolster the population of this ancient woodland indicator and, in time, fill the gaps in the canopy above them.

As always, fantastic sweet treats, hot refreshments and smiles all round. β˜•οΈπŸ°

Join us next Sunday 1st February for our first volunteer morning of 2026! β˜€οΈ ❄️

We will be constructing tree guards for our recently planted saplings, creating habitat piles and dead-hedging with woodland material, and giving 10 Wild Service Trees a new home in Chill Wood πŸ’ͺπŸ»πŸ™ŒπŸ»

Come along, learn something, impart your wisdom, eat cake, drink tea, meet new people, give back and be part of something bigger - or all of the above!

We’ll meet at the steps next to the Weir. Just bring yourself and suitable clothing. We’ll sort the rest 🌳

πŸŽ‰ Exciting News!! πŸƒ

Last night the Parish Council welcomed our January planting report and gave the 🟒 (GREEN LIGHT!) for a further 10 Wild Service Trees to be planted in Chill Wood before the Spring.

We will source these locally from and bolster the growing population of these rare post-pioneer species we are fortunate enough to have in Chill Wood πŸ’ͺ🏻 🌳

We have an exciting year ahead of us and we need YOU to be part of it!

πŸ“ΈKeep sending us your pictures of Chill Wood and its resident fauna, flora and fungi πŸ™

They say start as you mean to go on… and we just started the year planting 170 trees in a frosty ancient woodland! πŸƒπŸ™ŒπŸ»

🌳 We bolstered open areas with a mix of Oak and Wild Cherry, reserving the Hazel, Hawthorn and Dogwood for area boundaries. We finished the day planting our pioneer-species, Silver Birch and Mountain Ash, that will help provide resources for a more complex woodland system to establish.

- Thankyou and your Free Trees initiative!

🟒 You’ll notice lots of tree guards in the woodland the next time you visit. We kindly ask the community to support us in our efforts and refrain from moving the tree guards as they’re providing well needed protection from deer and other curious animals.

πŸ’ͺ🏻 If you do notice any tree guards out of place, please inform us so that we can come and re-install them in their rightful place and keep the woodland free from clutter and loose tree guards!

Happy New Year! πŸ₯³

The festive season is the perfect time to wrap up and take a stroll with loved ones.

Did you know that a winter walk in Chill Wood offers a special treat? You can spot the first snowdrops of the season! πŸ€—πŸ™ŒπŸ»β„οΈ

🧐Need help finding them? Look for white flowers at the base of trees and follow the speckles - you can't miss them!

πŸ“Έ Thanks for the photo, Sonya!
