Last week a crew attended an incident on the moors above W***y hall’s wood near to white wells, which was a camp fire found unattended. The crew had to dig a fair way down to fully extinguish the smouldering peat and prevent any further spread. Although the weather has been a bit damper recently, it’s not need enough to fully saturate the ground. Thank you to those that called this in, it could have had potential to develop into a larger incident.

Fires of any sort are still prohibited on the moorland, even at this time of year. If anyone does see any signs of fire on the moors please call 999, ask for fire and give an accurate location for us to locate it.

Whilst we don't have James May to show off our impressive fire appliances, we'd argue ours might be even more impressive than both James and the appliances of our friends at Dorset & Wiltshire! 😉

One thing we do have in common is the need for on-call firefighters.

Following the Government’s emergency alert yesterday about the very high risk of wildfires, we’re asking everyone across West Yorkshire to take extra care.

🚫 Please avoid having bonfires, fireworks, campfires or disposable BBQs during this period.

With the ground extremely dry, fires can start easily, spread quickly and become difficult to control - putting people, homes, wildlife and our countryside at risk.

We understand people may be concerned if they see neighbours having BBQs, bonfires or campfires. Please remember that we’re unable to respond unless there is an emergency affecting life or property.

☎️ If there is a fire or an immediate risk to life or property, call 999.

Please help us keep West Yorkshire safe, please .

Thank you.

🚒Incident🚒

Yesterday evening at approx 19:50hrs a crew attended Ilkley moor to reports of a BBQ in use. A member of public has approached us with footage of this incident occurring, were it seems those involved walked past the large signs which state “no fires or BBQs on the moor”. The attitude and behaviour toward this is completely inexcusable given the persistent warnings not to have fires or BBQ on our moorlands especially with the current heat wave conditions.

A PSPO is still in force with a £2,500 fine if found to be offending. When visiting our moors, please no not use BBQs or camp fires, discard of ci******es properly and take your littler home with you.

Yesterday evening we were alerted to a small fire in the wooded area at Yewbank Terrace. On arrival we witnessed 3 youths running away from the incident and smoke rising from the woods. Our crew used a hose reel jet to extinguish 3 seats of fire.

With the current dry period and the dry vegetation within the area, this could have caused a much larger incident had it gone unnoticed. Thank you to the residents who spotted this and called us immediately.

During yesterday evenings training period we were mobilised to a fire in the open with youths in attendance on Ilkley Moor, in the wooded area close to Spicey Gill.

The incident was located at the top end of the woods where we found that a campfire had been lit and nobody in attendance. It might not seem much at first, but our thermal imaging camera showed a temperature of over 200 degrees. The crew used two water backpacks to extinguish the smouldering remains.

We cannot stress enough that fires on the moorland during this dry spell heightens the risk of a wildfire starting.

We remind everyone visiting the moors that fire and BBQs are strictly prohibited with a PSPO still in force. Please also take your litter home with you and discard of ci******es safely.
