Hello everyone, it's Chief Inspector John Jennings-Wharton from our Road Policing Unit here and I want to let you know about our recent activity as part of Specialist Operation’s Op Shoal.

As a reminder, this campaign aims to make our roads safer by targeting people who drive dangerously, drive illegally, drive impaired and use the roads for criminal activity. We attend areas that are collision hotspots and areas you tell us you are concerned about every week by targeting them with enhanced resources for periods of time during certain days, based on intelligence.

Over the last three weeks you may have seen us conducting our activity in the Preston, Blackpool and Hyndburn areas of Lancashire where we continue to reduce the risk on our roads by visibility and enforcement.

To bring you up to date, since the beginning of March when this operation commenced, we have:

• Issued 250 traffic offence reports, focusing on the fatal 5 offences

• Arrested 95 people, 80 of them for impaired driving

• Seized 52 vehicles for document offences

• Searched 30 people

One of the arrests was a driver who was stopped at our check site - the vehicle was stolen, the driver refused an impairment test and had other stolen property in his possession. The driver was arrested for all offences and awaits their day in court.

Whilst people continue to cause harm to the communities of Lancashire my team and I will be there to enforce the law against them and I make no apologies for my officers doing this.

❗ Arrest Update ❗

Yesterday evening around 6:30pm officers from our Road Crime Team were on patrol when they had reason to stop a VW Golf travelling on Knowles Way, Chorley.

The car and the driver were searched under section 23 of the misuse of drugs act.

Officers found approximately £10,000 of cash in the car (pictured here).

The driver, a 28 year old man from Manchester was arrested on suspicion of money laundering.

He is currently in custody.

The man driving the Vauxhall Astra in this footage is Bryan Wrigglesworth. He thought it was a good idea to make off from our officers down the A59 before smashing through the central reservation.

On 27th April 2025, our Armed Response officers spotted Wriggleworth’s car on Strand Road in Preston, where they signalled for him to stop.

He failed to do so, and a pursuit ensued. Wrigglesworth travelled 6 miles on busy, arterial routes, at speeds reaching 110mph before losing control of the vehicle, crashing through the central reservation into the opposite carriageway.

He provided a positive roadside drug wipe for co***ne at the scene, and was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, drug driving, driving with no license and driving with no insurance.

He was later charged, and Wrigglesworth, 51 of The Apiary, Bretherton, appeared at Preston court where he was convicted of dangerous driving. He was jailed for 12 months and received a driving ban for three years and four months. He will have to take an extended re-test before he can gain his license back.

If you witness this type of criminality, or have information to pass to us, please call 101 or if a crime is ongoing, call 999.

Morning everyone,

We are investigating a serious collision which happened in Darwen yesterday and we need your help if you saw or recorded anything.

Our officers were called to Church Bank Street at 9.05pm following reports that an Audi Q4 Etron had collided with a pedestrian.

The pedestrian – a man in his 40s – suffered a number of serious injuries and remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The driver of the Audi, a 28-year-old man from Old Langho was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He remains in custody at this time.

This collision has left a man with a number of significant injuries and our thoughts are with him and his loved ones at this time.

Work is ongoing to establish the full circumstances which led to the collision. We know there were a number of people in the area attending the local music festival who potentially saw what happened or captured the incident on mobile phone footage. We want to hear from them as soon as possible. We would also ask that anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage which could help us with our enquiries to contact the police as soon as possible.

Email [email protected] or call 101 and quote log 1533 of 23rd May 2026.

At 2320hrs on Tuesday 12th May 2026 we received a report a van had just been stolen from Thornton Cleveleys.

Local patrols and Spec Ops made to the area and it wasn't long before the stolen van was sighted and failed to stop.

With patrols ahead supported by PD Murphy, patrols behind supported by PD Tyco and a successful sting by ARV it wasn't long before the offender was under arrest.

At 0010hrs one very happy owner received the call to say we had his van.
This van was his livelihood.

Hayden Bowers, 30 has been charged and remanded

Afternoon all,

We want to let you know about some arrests made last night.

Just before 11pm yesterday, officers were on patrol on Lower Hollin Bank Street, Blackburn when they requested a VW Golf car to stop.

The driver failed to stop and made off at high speed, and the car was later found abandoned.

Following enquiries, two men were detained at an address in Bower Street, Blackburn.

A search of the address found a quantity of cannabis valued around £80,000.

A 28-year-old man and a 21-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, and possession with intent to supply class B drugs.

They are currently in custody.

Hello, Chief Inspector John Jennings-Wharton here of the Roads Policing Unit, and I want to update you on Op Shoal.

This week Specialist Operations officers have been in the Hyndburn and Nelson areas, where more vehicles have been seized, more people arrested and more TORs have been issued, focussing on the fatal 5 offences.

Since the inception of Op Shoal across Lancashire on 3rd March my staff have:

❌ Arrested 70 impaired drivers

🚨 Arrested 9 others for serious offences - such as wanted people, for causing serious injury whilst dangerous driving along with many others

🚙 Seized 35 vehicles for document offences

✍️ Issued 149 Traffic Offence Reports

One of the seizures was a Lamborghini Urus being driven while uninsured which our officers investigated - this resulted in the vehicle being repossessed by finance company.

One of the arrests was for a driver that failed to stop for my officers and collided with a motorcyclist - he was arrested for many offences including causing serious injury whilst dangerous driving.

Op Shoal focuses on those who cause harm to the public on our roads and this robust action will continue across Lancashire every week to reduce the number of those injured on our roads.
