Rita Sinclair Wins BBC Local Radio Make A Difference Award!

We are incredibly proud and lucky to have Rita Sinclair as part of our Havering Dance team.

A dedicated Havering dance teacher for over 40 years and a much-loved figure in the local community, Rita has recently received a prestigious BBC Local Radio Make a Difference Award β€” and we couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of this recognition.

The BBC Make a Difference Awards shine a light on unsung heroes across eight categories, celebrating volunteers, fundraisers, community groups and individuals whose work has made a lasting impact on the lives of others.

Rita was recognised for her incredible fundraising efforts in aid of St Francis Hospice, who cared for her late husband, Ken. Through her dedication and determination, Rita has helped raise an amazing Β£46,000 to date.

But Rita’s contribution goes far beyond fundraising. Since starting at London Borough of Havering in 1983, she has inspired generations of local residents through her passion for dance, helping people stay active, social and connected.

Her weekly classes and tea dance at New Windmill Hall in Upminster bring together dozens of couples aged between 50 and 96, creating a welcoming community where people can enjoy Latin dancing, exercise, friendship and, most importantly, have fun.

Rita’s enthusiasm, kindness and commitment to the people of Havering are truly inspirational. We are so proud to have her as part of our team and grateful for everything she continues to give to our dance community.

Congratulations, Rita β€” this recognition is so well deserved! ❀️

For anyone inspired by Rita and looking to enjoy music, movement and friendship, new dates are available for Havering’s adult dance programme, with classes catering for all abilities.

NWG Bystander Training

The NWG Exploitation Network, a leading UK safeguarding charity, uses this day to provide targeted active bystander training for professionals working with children and vulnerable adults. NWG Network sports team deliver active bystander training. This is available to anyone working/volunteering in the sport, leisure and physical activity sectors. Training focuses on recognising the signs of exploitation, determining appropriate tactics to disrupt harmful behaviour safely, and supporting those at risk.

Tackling the "Bystander Effect": Research shows people are statistically less likely to help someone in need when others are present. This campaign combats that by training people to step up rather than assume someone else will intervene.

Origin: The date was chosen to remember Kitty Genovese, whose murder in New York in 1964 highlighted the dangerous consequences of the bystander effect

NWG is a charitable organisation formed as a UK network of over 14,500 practitioners who disseminate our information down through their services, to professionals working on the issue of child exploitation (CE) and trafficking within the UK. The network covers voluntary and statutory services and private companies working in this field. They offer support, guidance and raise the profile, provide updates, training, share national developments, influence the development of national and local policy informed by practice.
