Ask Meltham - Action Plan Published

Back in late 2024, Meltham Town Council & Kirklees carried out another Ask Meltham Consultation, which involved residents giving us your feedback on what really matters to you.

What happened next?

Over 500 people took part in our 2024 conversations about life in Meltham. We held feedback sessions in Autumn 2025 for the community to see the results and give their views on what the priority actions should be.

Based on further views from over 130 people, Meltham Town Council have agreed actions and approved a budget as part of their Town Council Plan.

To find out what people said, and to read more about our actions & next steps, follow the link below -

Can we ask you about Meltham? You might meet us whilst you’re out and about in Meltham, Helme and Wilshaw between Saturday 6 July and Friday 2 August 2019.

This week is Neighbourhood Watch Week - 1-7 June 2026

It's a chance for Neighbourhood Watch members to come together, connect and take action. We host events, celebrate volunteers and recognise the police officers who go above and beyond for our neighbourhoods.

Here are some ideas of what local groups and individuals can do to help celebrate the work of our volunteers, and help bring communities together

Today’s activity ideas:

Day 2 – Community Pride & Shared Spaces

🧹 Tidy a small area near your home or block
🚮 Join or organise a short litter pick (even 15 minutes helps)
🎨 Write a positive chalk message or window sign
🌼 Add something to a community planter, pot, or noticeboard

Introducing your new Town Mayor for 2026/27, Lisa Coates

At the Annual Town Meeting earlier this week, the outgoing Mayor, Cllr Ann Jurczyszyn handed over the chains to Cllr Lisa Coates. Lisa and the Town Council thanked Ann for her service during a busy and successful year.

Lisa works full time as Head of Sport at Lancaster University and has been an independent town councillor since being elected in 2023. Since moving to Meltham in 2020 (grew up not too far away in Slaithwaite), Lisa became a trustee & volunteer at Meltham Sports Complex and has also spent a short period as a school governor. Lisa is passionate about Sport and the community and has helped support the introduction of Youth Provision in Meltham.

When speaking with Lisa, she had the following message –

“I’m deeply honoured to have been nominated as the next Mayor of Meltham for 2026/27.

Before looking ahead, I want to thank Ann for her outstanding service as Town Mayor over the past year. Her dedication, energy and genuine love for our community have shone through in everything she does, from supporting local events and youth projects, to improving our green spaces and helping “Make Meltham Sparkle” at Christmas. Ann’s leadership has helped move forward important projects including Broadlands Recreation Ground, continued investment in Robert Ashton Memorial Park, and stronger community engagement through the Ask Meltham consultation.

Meltham is a town with a proud community spirit, and I’m excited about what we can achieve together in the year ahead. As we move into 2026/27, I want to continue building on this positive momentum, supporting local groups, listening to residents, encouraging opportunities for young people, improving our town environment, and celebrating everything that makes Meltham such a special place to live.

I’m looking forward to working with councillors, volunteers, community organisations and residents across the town, and I’m confident that together we can make the coming year a positive and successful one for everyone.

Thank you again to Ann for her commitment and service — and thank you to everyone who continues to support our wonderful community”

District Council elections 2026

On Thursday 7 May 2026, District Council elections are taking place in our area, due to a boundary review all 69 Council seats will be up for election. This means residents will be asked to vote for three candidates to represent their ward

Whilst this does not impact those currently representing Meltham Town Council (as elections are not due to take place for this until May 2027), we would still like to encourage you to vote

Meltham Town Council acts in partnership with Kirklees and its elected members, offering local intelligence and ensuring we utilise opportunities to influence decisions that impact our community.

So if you haven't voted yet (by post), remember to vote on Thursday, take photo ID with you, and head to your nearest polling station, which can be found using the link below:

Meltham Pleasure Grounds - Update

We are aware that a few residents have been asking about the closure of the bridge in Meltham Pleasure Grounds recently.

There appears to be some damage to the bridge structure, and so it has been closed for repair. Please observe the safety barriers in place, as the bridge should not be used until it is fully re-open on 12th May.

If we hear anything further we will update everyone as soon as we can
