NORFOLK COUNCIL STATEMENT ON MAGDALEN ROAD BRIDGE CLOSURE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS RAISED ..
I fully understand the concerns that have been raised locally, and I’m happy to provide some further detail on the current position.
In terms of communication, due to the nature of the structural concerns identified, the closure had to be implemented at short notice to ensure public safety. As soon as we became aware, we made every effort to contact affected businesses directly; however, we were unfortunately unable to get through to a couple of businesses at the time.
A Public Information Notice (PIN) was sent out yesterday to residents and businesses on both sides of the bridge to ensure they are fully informed (approximately 1,500 addresses).
We also issued updates via social media at the earliest opportunity to help notify the wider community.
Regarding signage, standard closure signage was initially installed due to the emergency nature of the situation. However, we recognised the need for clearer information on site. As a result, additional bespoke signage, providing more detail on the exact location of the closure and improved advance warning, has now been requested and will be installed at the earliest opportunity by our contractor, which will hopefully be today. We have requested additional signage confirming that The C**k Inn remains open.
With respect to the current programme, we are currently trying to bring together the necessary specialist contractors for attendance early next week to carry out repairs, allowing the bridge to be reopened. In terms of timescales, we are working towards reopening the bridge as soon as possible.
During these works, the bridge may need to be fully closed to all users, this is still to be confirmed by our specialist contractors. Currently the bridge remains open to pedestrians and dismounted cyclists.
We will keep everyone updated as things progress.
I hope this provides some reassurance and clarity, but please do not hesitate to get in touch if you need any further information or support in responding to residents and businesses.
