Kendal’s new Mayor, Councillor Helen Ladhams, was formally selected at Kendal Town Council’s Mayor Making Ceremony last night.

The ceremony was held at Kendal Town Hall and was attended by local dignitaries, representatives of Kendal Town Council and Westmorland Council, and guests of the outgoing and incoming Mayors, including many of the volunteers that outgoing Mayor, Councillor Richard Sutton, met with during the year as part of his mayoral theme of ‘Volunteering.’

Cllr Helen Ladhams served as Cllr Sutton’s deputy and is now the 278th person to hold the title of Kendal Mayor. The theme of her Mayoral year will be ‘Community, Culture and Climate’.

Kendal’s new Deputy Mayor will be Councillor Leone Edwards.

Congratulations to our new Mayor and Deputy! We're looking forward to the coming year!

On 9th May, Kendal's new Mayor Cllr Helen Ladhams, hosted a Commemoration of the Coronation Service in the Mayor's Parlour at Kendal Town Hall.

Back in 2023, to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III, The Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria invited Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian and Muslim faith leaders, to a Service of Choral Evensong at Carlisle Cathedral. Many of the prayers, hymns and music were also used in the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey.

At the Commemoration on 9 May, the reading of the Act of Commitment was undertaken by two of the people (Baha’i Betty S***t and Buddhist Jacquetta Gomes) who read in the Cathedral and by Kendal Mayor, Cllr Helen Ladhams, and Cllr Doug Rathbone, leader of Westmorland and Furness Council.

The Commemoration finished with The Town Crier of Kendal, Richard Matthews, reading the Proclamation of King Charles III as King.

On 2nd May, Kendal's Mayor Cllr Sutton and his wife Sarah visited a creative workshop at Kendal Library. Local artist Hester Harrington was running the session, which was partly funded with a grant from Kendal Town Council.

Attendees had the opportunity to create a visual story, recording a place, nature, or moment that is important to them.

Cllr Sutton and Mrs Sutton enjoyed their visit and were really impressed by the artists' work.
