Holmer Green Pond
Little Missenden Parish Council is aware of residentsβ concerns regarding the village pond following the recent installation of an interceptor tank by Buckinghamshire Council and the pond drying during a prolonged dry spell.
We would like to clarify that the pond is owned and maintained by the Parish Council. Buckinghamshire Council has now completed the installation of the interceptor tank, which was undertaken to protect the pondβs long term health by preventing road pollutants, oils and debris from entering the water system.
Holmer Green Pond is not spring fed and does not have a natural water source. It is primarily filled by surface water and road run off. As a result, during extended periods of dry weather, water levels can fall significantly and, on occasion, the pond may dry out entirely. Unfortunately, the timing of the installation has coincided with an unusually dry period.
The interceptor tank itself has been installed as a preventative environmental measure. The Parish Councilβs priority is to ensure that any next steps are well informed, lawful and in the best interests of the pond and its wildlife. We are therefore seeking professional advice on appropriate options going forward, including whether works such as dredging to remove historic road pollutants may be necessary and how these could be carried out safely.
Any further works to the pond will be the responsibility of the Parish Council, and it is essential that only suitably qualified and experienced contractors are used to avoid unintended environmental damage.
The Parish Council is also aware that a fingerpost sign was damaged during the installation works. We are currently raising this matter with the contractor responsible and seeking appropriate repair.
Regarding concerns about rats around the pond, this is a longstanding issue and is closely linked to duck feeding. While many residents enjoy feeding the ducks, uneaten food left on the pond banks or in the water attracts rats. Although bait boxes are in place, they are ineffective when there is a constant supply of alternative food available.
Residents are therefore kindly encouraged to use appropriate duck food, feed small amounts and avoid leaving food if the ducks are not interested, returning at another time instead.
The Parish Council understands residentsβ concerns and appreciates the strength of feeling locally. We will continue to monitor the situation, take appropriate professional advice, and keep residents informed as decisions are made. The long term protection and sustainability of the pond remain our priority.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
