Introducing Christine (pictured far right)

⭐️Tell us your first name and volunteer role. My name is Christine, and I am a volunteer organiser of Hessle Feast, a long-running community event in Hessle that brings people together to celebrate, support local businesses, and create a real sense of community spirit.
⭐️How long have you been volunteering? I’ve been involved for around 12 years now, since 2014, and I actually fell into volunteering completely by accident. At the time, the event was being organised by one person and wasn’t widely advertised, so many people didn’t even know it was happening. I offered to design a poster and took it around local shops to help spread the word — and that simple act ended up being the start of everything. I’m still not entirely sure whether I regret that moment or not… but in all honesty, I don’t — it’s been an incredible journey.
⭐️What have you enjoyed most about your time volunteering? The most rewarding part has been watching the event grow and seeing the community come together each year. From families making it part of their annual tradition to local businesses benefiting from the increased footfall, it’s amazing to see the positive impact it has. Knowing you’ve played a small part in creating something that means so much to people is incredibly special.
⭐️What benefits have you experienced personally? Volunteering has given me a real sense of pride and achievement, as well as the opportunity to build strong connections within the community and develop confidence in organising and coordinating events.
⭐️Would you recommend volunteering (with your organisation or generally) to others? I would absolutely recommend volunteering, whether that’s with Hessle Feast or any local organisation. It’s a great way to meet people, learn new skills, and make a genuine difference.
The Fabulous Hessle Feast will take place on Sunday 12th July. Check out the page for all the details

Introducing Andy...

⭐️Tell us your first name and volunteer role. My name is Andy, I’m 68 and I’m a coach, secretary and team manager.
⭐️What charity/organisation/group do you volunteer with? I volunteer with the Hull Cycle Speedway Club
⭐️How long have you been volunteering? I’ve been volunteering for over 50 years.
⭐️Why did you decide to begin volunteering? I started volunteering to help the club I raced for.
⭐️What have you enjoyed most about your time volunteering? I most enjoy helping youngsters and watching them develop into accomplished riders and team members.
⭐️What benefits have you experienced personally? The main benefit has been enjoying the role and also using my experience to take a university degree.
⭐️Do you have any stories you could share about your time volunteering? Cycle speedway started on the bomb sites that remained after the second world war and was a ‘boom sport’ in the 1950’s. It became popular in Hull again in the 1970’s when speedway started at The Boulevard and is now spread out through the country.
⭐️ Would you recommend volunteering (with your organisation or generally) to others? I would recommend volunteering with the Hull Cycle Speedway Club as it provides a friendly and enjoyable environment and also in general to broaden your experience and it may lead to other opportunities.
⭐️What would you say to anyone who is thinking about volunteering? If you’re thinking of volunteering give it a go as it will help your confidence and introduce you to new skills.
⭐️ Anything else you’d like to add? Come along to The Hessle Raceway on Livingstone Road to watch the racing, try it for yourself, or help out with volunteering.
You can contact Hull Cycle Speedway though their website http://hullcyclespeedway.co.uk/
