PD Dixon has hit the ground running in some of his very first shifts!

Firstly, working with our Roads Policing πŸš“ and NPAS 🚁 colleagues he attended a decamp from a crashed stolen moped where 3 offenders had run away. One was caught by land cops and the other two were seen in the woods by air cops. PD Dixon was sent in to negotiate their surrender and, making their first smart choice of the evening, the remaining two came out with their hands up.

The next night, he attended a vehicle suspected of being involved in theft offences was stopped by Roads Policing officers. Presumably seeking to get 'beach body ready' the passenger went for a spontaneous jog. Dixon arrived 20 minutes later and tracked him across and small grassy field and into a wood where he was hiding behind a tree. Turns out he was wanted πŸ‘€ that'll be one in custody then.

Great work Dixon πŸ’ͺ🏻

When a male arrested for stalking tried to hide crucial evidence by throwing his mobile phone into thick brambles, he seemed to succeed. Officers spent in excess of 30 minutes unsuccessfully trying to locate it. Cue PD Chip showing them how its done - within a couple of minutes of his arrival Chip had located the phone and shown his chauffeur where it was! The suspect has been charged with a string of offences. Chip 1 - Suspect 0.

When a domestic abuser, who had reportedly assaulted and strangled their former partner, fled into a wooded area near the scene it could have taken hours for two-legged officers to find him. It took PD Kylo about 20 minutes and then he gently persuaded them to accompany him to a waiting police van πŸš“ Great work Kylo πŸ‘

♠️ PD Ace is one of our newest recruits, having licensed just a few months ago. He attended a decamp following a pursuit where the driver didn't want to stay for a chat with officers. Ace put his amazing sense of smell to good use - tracking over fields and through trees πŸŒ³πŸ•β€πŸ¦ΊπŸŒ³

Sadly he didn't catch his suspect this time, BUT he did find his clumsily dropped wallet containing his ID. Oooops πŸ‘€

PD Cleo massively appreciates all the supportive comments she's received on our last post after finding five burglars hiding in a cupboard. Several comments told her she was a 'good boy' πŸ‘€ Cleo's response is below:

πŸ• PD Cleo responded alongside her handler to reports of an intruder in a disused office building . Searching from bottom to top Cleo suddenly became very interested in a cupboard on the third floor. Instead of escaping to Narnia through the back of the cupboard as the FIVE burglars presumably planned to do, they were forced to come face to face with Cleo and five pairs of cuffs.

🧸 PD Bear assisted with a search after a driver failed to stop for officers and decamped on foot from a vehicle in Bedfordshire. While his two-legged colleagues got to the driver first (luckily for him), Bear located a quantity of deal bags containing a white powder that we're pretty confident wasn't for washing clothes. The driver was subsequently arrested for possession with intent to supply a controlled drug.

🐾 Four new police dogs – Murphy, Madden, Dixon and Muzza – have joined the team, having successfully completed their initial course.

The dogs and their handlers - Sergeant Dan Amos, PC Dale Jenkins, PC Josh Westgate and PC Liam Mandrell - officially passed out at a ceremony held at Hertfordshire Constabulary’s headquarters earlier this month. They took part in demonstrations to showcase some of the skills they have developed during their General Purpose Initial Course, before a formal ceremony where they were presented with certificates.

During the 13-week intense course the dogs trained in scent tracking, searching, obedience, agility, chasing and detaining.

πŸ’™ Two of the dogs, PD Muzza and PD Murphy, were named in tribute to two Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Armed Policing Unit officers who both sadly passed away last year – former PC Paul Murray and Sergeant Dan Murphy. Their family members were invited to the ceremony to meet the dogs and received special commemorative plaques.

Paul Murray was an officer for 24 years, spending most of his career in the Armed Policing Unit, and was a true professional known for his calmness and good nature. On commemorating him, Chief Superintendent Jon Hutchinson said: β€œIf PD Muzza embodies even half of his courage, calmness and reliability then the criminals best be worried!”

Sergeant Dan Murphy devoted his life to policing, joining as a police cadet at the age of 16 and going from being a cadet to a Special Constable, a Police Community Support Officer, a Police Constable and a Sergeant. His journey was driven by an unwavering commitment to public service, community confidence, and putting victims at the heart of policing. Addressing his family at the ceremony, CS Hutchinson said: β€œIn honour of his service and the legacy he leaves behind, the Dog Unit proudly carry his name forward through Police Dog Murphy, ensuring that his spirit, dedication and remarkable standards of policing endure for generations to come.”

PD Dixon’s breeders were also invited to the ceremony and received a certificate commemorating their outstanding contribution to policing through their dog breeding.

Police dogs are a vital resource for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire – they work closely with their handlers, working across the three counties to keep the public safe. From helping to find missing people, to searching for suspects and recovering evidence, they are a key part of modern policing.

Chief Inspector Declan McDonagh, who heads up the B*H Dog Unit, said: β€œI am incredibly proud to welcome four new dogs to the team, who will be out on the streets sniffing out crime and helping to protect the public alongside their handlers.

β€œIt was especially poignant for us to be able to honour two of our officers by naming two of our dogs after them as a lasting tribute to their legacy – honouring their memory, continuing their legacy of service and demonstrating the commitment they showed to protecting the public across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire, and ensuring that they are remembered.

β€œThe training course is intense, and the handlers and their respective families invest considerable time and effort into developing the dogs and successfully achieving their accreditations. I am very much looking forward to watching them develop in their operational roles.”
