A Scottish Borders National Park?

A Scottish Borders National Park? Unite local industries & communities behind an international brand; transform our economy; encourage appreciation of our outstanding assets & heritage.

Could the National Park 'brand' spark a Borders-wide revival? National Parks are associated by people the world over with fabulous scenery and first rate facilities. While the parks are the major draw for visitors, the economic benefits that ripple out to communities and gateway towns beyond the park boundaries - the 'halo' effect - are huge. In Norway and New Zealand, new national parks have help

ed to stem rural depopulation and generate new business opportunities to transform the fragile economies of scenic but remote rural areas. Many parallels can be drawn with the Scottish Borders and this website invites discussion amongst local people and potential visitors about the creation and possible format of a new Scottish Borders National Park. The objective is to find a means to unite the region’s:

- Tourism - Agriculture - Forestry - Leisure - Sporting

industries behind a powerful, internationally recognised brand with the potential to transform the region’s economy - and establish a deeper appreciation of our outstanding natural assets and heritage. The new National Park Authority could manage, operate and market the region’s scenic assets and facilities and focus on:

· Promoting responsible access to the region’s scenic assets, while giving protection to these same assets; and
· Stimulating and coordinating new and existing business ideas and investment both in the Scottish Borders and across its borders. As promised, here is a link to a copy of the nomination form which we sent to Scottish Government before the deadline of 29 February. The only addition we've made for public consumption is the small preface at the beginning. Since then we've met the Minister concerned, Lorna Slater, and showed her around as much of Roxburghshire as we could in only a few hours. As one of only five bids, and the only one to have had the backing of an independent feasibility study, we believe there is a good chance of success. Even if we're not successful, we hope that this document can help to inspire all those Borders residents and businesses who embrace innovation and want to improve the socio-economic future of the Borders to keep up the good work. Thank you to all our followers for their support. MRD

The Scottish Government's assessment of the 5 bids for national park status began on 1st March. We will share our bid with all our FB followers shortly - we believe it makes a very strong and compelling case.

It’s going to be a tough decision to name Scotland’s next National Park. By the time nominations closed last Thursday we had received five fantastic proposals.

Unprompted by our Campaign Team, some good media coverage of our beautiful Scottish Borders.

This part of Britain is just as beautiful as the pretty Scottish Highlands - but attracts a fraction of the visitors making it the perfect place for a relaxing countryside escape.
