🏛️✨ Heritage Open Days is officially here! ✨🏛️

From 11–20 September, Heritage Open Days celebrates the history, stories and places that make our communities so special – and there’s plenty to discover right here in Great Yarmouth. 🎉

This year’s programme includes the chance to:

🏰 Explore Great Yarmouth Town Hall – step inside this iconic building, discover the stunning Assembly Room and see the civic regalia.

🔔 Visit Great Yarmouth Minster Bell Tower – climb up to the ringing chamber, see the historic bells and even have a go at bell ringing.

📚 Discover Anna Sewell House – visit the birthplace of the author of Black Beauty and learn more about her life and legacy.

⚓ Step inside the Fishermen’s Hospital – discover the fascinating history of this unique 18th-century building and the people it was built to support.

🚶 Explore Blackfriars – join a guided tour taking in the Town Wall, Blackfriars Tower, Jewish Cemetery, statues and the Old Potteries.

🏘️ Take part in guided heritage walks – including the Finest Quay walk, exploring the history and stories of Great Yarmouth’s South Quay.

⚽ Exciting news for Gorleston Recreation Ground! 🎉

At a well-attended meeting of Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s Development Management Committee last night, planning permission was approved for Gorleston Football Club’s ambitious proposals for the Recreation Ground. 🙌

The proposals – agreed by ten votes to one - will see the club return to its historic home, where Gorleston FC was based for almost 100 years, while creating a fantastic new sports and community facility for the area.

A total of 407 letters of support, 56 letters of no objection and 55 letters of objection were received as part of the public consultation process.

The proposals include:
⚽️ A full-sized enclosed 3G first-team pitch with spectator stands
🏟️ A new clubhouse and community hub, café and toilets
🏀 A hard-surface sports court
🚗 On-site parking for more than 100 vehicles

The project will also support a wide range of community activities - including women and girls’ football, disability and inclusive sessions, mental health and wellbeing initiatives, and activities for those aged over 55.

The existing skate park, play area and multi-use games area will remain under Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s ownership and open for public use. The northern section of the rec will remain publicly open green space.

This is an exciting step forward for Gorleston FC and the wider community. 👏

🔊 Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s cabinet last night endorsed a new Local Plan ahead of it being put to all members of the council for final approval.

The Local Plan is a key document which sets out a vision for future development in the borough. It identifies the amount of development which needs to be planned for, where that development should be located and how it should be delivered. The Local Plan also sets out policies which are used to help determine planning applications. 🏡

Full Council will now be asked to adopt the new Great Yarmouth Local Plan that covers the period from 2024 to 2042. Its preparation included public consultation and examination by the Government’s Planning Inspectorate.

👉 Councillor Daniel Candon, GYBC’s portfolio holder for Economic Development and Growth, said: ‘“This strategy provides an important planning framework for the borough’s future needs - including homes for local residents, the right infrastructure and continued economic growth.

“Equally, it allows us to be clear about where development should not take place, helping to protect our green spaces and the distinct identity of communities across the borough.

“I would like to thank everyone who attended the public engagement sessions, responded to the consultation and provided enormously valuable feedback. Your views have helped shape the Local Plan.”

Meanwhile, changes to the national planning system - including revised housing targets for local authorities - mean the council is required to begin preparing a new Local Plan which would cover the period up until 2045 and that will need to reflect the Government’s call for about 40 per cent more homes than the Local Plan (2024-2042) which has been endorsed.

👉 Councillor Candon said: ‘’We remain firmly opposed to the new mandatory housing numbers being imposed by the Government and will continue to make that case. Any new development must be appropriate and supported by the infrastructure our residents need.’’

🌿 Work is underway to give the Marina Centre area another little refresh!

Following the improvements made to the Marina Car Park last year, we have reviewed the area and identified a few further improvements to help keep it looking neat, tidy and well maintained. ✨

The work includes:

🌳 Installing additional birdsmouth fencing and barge boards along the roadside edge to help contain the bark and prevent it spreading onto the footpath.

🌱 Adding extra-height barge boards to sections of the existing fencing, helping to support the bark across areas with changing ground levels.

🪵 Topping up areas with additional bark where needed to keep the beds looking fresh and well cared for.

These improvements will help enhance the appearance of the area while making sure the bark beds remain tidy and contained. 💚

We’ll keep you updated as the work progresses and share more details once it has been completed. 👀✨

🏀⚽ Work is getting underway at Rollesby Playing Field! 🌳

Exciting improvements are coming to the playing field, with work starting on the installation of a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) for the local community.

The project is being funded through Capital Funding, Section 106 contributions and Rollesby Parish Council, helping to make the most of existing facilities and investment in the area.
As part of the project, the MUGA equipment previously removed from Beacon Park Play Area will be relocated and reused at its new home in Rollesby. The equipment was removed as part of clearance works to make way for the new building development at James Paget University Hospital.

The project will also include:
✨ Installation of the MUGA equipment
💧 Improved drainage
🏗️ New tarmac surfacing
⚽ Relining of the games area

By reusing the existing equipment, we're giving it a new lease of life while creating a fantastic space for the Rollesby community to enjoy. 🙌

🏋️‍♀️ A new chapter for Phoenix Leisure Centre! 🎉

Recently, the Mayor of Great Yarmouth, Councillor Jade Martin, officially opened the newly refurbished gym at Phoenix Leisure Centre, alongside Freedom Leisure, Council members and community partners.

Following significant investment, the gym has been transformed with state-of-the-art cardio and strength equipment, an expanded free weights area, functional training space and a brand-new Body Composition Analysis Machine. 💪

The Mayor, who has fond personal memories of learning to swim at Phoenix during her school days, said the refurbishment was “an investment in local people, opportunities and the future of Bradwell and Great Yarmouth.”

👏 A fantastic investment in the health and wellbeing of our community, creating a modern and welcoming space for people of all ages and abilities to get active.

🎉 A landmark home win at the Festival of Bowls! 🎉

Great Yarmouth’s 79th Festival of Bowls is officially underway – and it’s already delivered a fantastic moment for our home-town club! 🎯

🏆 Wellesley Bowls Club has won the Men’s Fours title, securing a brilliant 25–13 victory in the final. It’s the club’s first festival victory at its home ground since 2017!

Led by Chris Ambler, the Wellesley team battled through a competitive field of 18 teams before reaching the final, where they took on Mark Turner’s team.

👏 A huge congratulations to Chris and the team – and to everyone who came along to cheer them on!

Chris said after the win:

“It feels amazing as the home-town team to win one of the festival’s competitions. Huge thanks to all those involved in organising this fantastic event.”

Meanwhile, Tracey Johnson from Suffolk was crowned Ladies Singles champion, taking home the £350 prize after a fantastic competition that saw entries increase significantly this year. 🏆

The Festival of Bowls brings hundreds of competitors from across the UK to our seafront, with players of all abilities taking part – from amateurs to experienced professionals.

📅 The festival continues until Saturday, 26 September, so there’s still plenty of time to head down, soak up the atmosphere and watch some fantastic bowls on our seafront! 🌊
