This is one of our two furnaces, where Suffolk’s non-recyclable waste is used to generate electricity.

Waste is added, via the hoppers, to the furnaces, where it is burned at approximately 1000 degrees Celsius. We only use an alternative fuel (diesel) to start up after being offline. This is because we need to heat the furnace up to a temperature of 850 degrees Celsius before we can start adding waste, to ensure that organic pollutants are destroyed. Once the waste is burning, we keep the furnace going by constantly adding waste.

One of the most important stages of the energy-from-waste process takes place while the waste is in the bunker. The crane operators need to ensure that the waste has been thoroughly mixed before it is fed, about 4 tonnes at a time, into the furnace via the hopper. This is to ensure that the furnace temperature remains stable.

It’s Food Waste Action week from 9 - 15 March. The theme for 2026 is "Make Your Food Go Fuuuuuuuurther".

We'd all like to make our money go fuuuuurther, and saving a little at a time will help you to save a lot! To find out more about how you can cut back on your food costs and reduce waste, go to the Love Food Hate Waste - Community page or visit foodsavvy.org.uk

Food Savvy is a campaign from Hubbub, Norfolk and Suffolk councils to help households save food and money.

The second stage in the energy-from-waste process takes place in the tipping hall, where the lorries reverse into a bay to offload waste into the bunker.

The two main types of vehicle that deliver waste are the refuse collection vehicles or RCVs, which bring waste from areas surrounding the facility, and articulated vehicles, which bring waste from transfer stations further afield in Suffolk. An RCV delivers between 8 and 12 tonnes of waste, while the articulated vehicles can carry up to 25 tonnes.

It's Repair Week!

Think before you throw it away – could it be repaired?

Repair Week is about reducing waste, saving money and giving broken items a new life. From small electricals to clothing and household items, many things can be fixed with a little help.

Local Repair CafΓ©s are a great place to get advice and hands-on help from skilled volunteers. Find your nearest Repair CafΓ© here: https://www.suffolkrecycling.org.uk/reduce-reuse/repair-cafes-and-groups

The energy-from-waste process starts here, at our weighbridge. We weigh each of the lorries as they arrive and again as they leave, so that we know how much waste has been delivered.

We can accept up to 295,000 tonnes of waste per year. We process all of Suffolk's household waste, as well as some business waste. We also take waste from Norfolk and Southend.

Ever wondered what happens to your black bin waste after collection?

Instead of going to landfill, it’s delivered to our energy-from-waste facility where it’s used to generate electricity. By turning non-recyclable waste into energy, we’re reducing landfill use and making the most of what would otherwise go to waste.

Your bin might be out of sight, but its contents are helping to generate enough electricity for 50,00 homes!

From waste to wildflowers!

Sustainability isn’t just about how we operate, it’s also about the small changes we make every day.

We’ve built compost bins from reclaimed materials and placed them in our car park so that staff can drop off their grass cuttings, leaves, wood ash, shredded paper and other compostables. The compost produced will be used in the planters around our wildflower meadow, helping to support pollinators and improve soil health naturally.

A small idea, but one that keeps materials in use and supports biodiversity on our site.

Suffolk County Council staff found some interesting things on a recent litter pick. It's important that we put the right things into the right bins. If you're not sure, Suffolk Recycles has a very handy A to Z list on their website. Check it out - https://www.suffolkrecycling.org.uk/what-to-do-with-a-z
