My time as Assistant Manager - Reception at the beautiful Selsdon Park Hotel in Croydon was filled with warmth and professionalism. The Sanderson family ran it with real heart.
It was a place I respected deeply, but also one with limited room for growth.
With a vision for more responsibility and challenge, I made the difficult decision to move on…

My next step: Assistant Manager at the Royal Hotel, Weston-super-Mare, focusing on banqueting and food & beverage.
The role sharpened my operational skills, exposed me to large event logistics, and set me up for the next big leap.
Soon after, I was promoted to Relief Manager for Bristol and West Hotels, overseeing multiple properties and filling leadership gaps as needed.
A big responsibility, and a big vote of confidence.
Every role wasn’t just a job — it was a lesson in people, pressure, and progress.

In 1966, I left college and took my first steps as a trainee manager at the Kings Head in Cirencester — a 3-star, 2 Rosette hotel — under the expert guidance of Michael Gannon, who became both a mentor and friend.
But it was in Yorkshire where the scale of hospitality truly expanded for me.
As Assistant Manager in a top restaurant, I helped oversee seasonal outside catering events serving up to 5,000 guests across the county.
Every buffet, every banquet, every storm we cooked through taught me more than a classroom ever could.
🍴 Hospitality isn’t just about food — it’s about people, pressure, and passion.

The back door of Buckingham Palace — where I met royalty for the first time.
At The Goring Hotel, often called the Queen’s favourite, I experienced moments I never imagined — including forming a bond with George Goring OBE, who became a mentor and a great supporter of my journey.
He wasn’t just a Master Innkeeper — he was someone my children adored, and someone I’ll always remember with deep gratitude.
Some jobs give you experience.
Others gift you people who shape your life.
