Save Grange Lido CBS

Save Grange Lido CBS Our mission is to restore and reopen this iconic Art Deco, grade II listed swimming pool on the promenade at Grange Over Sands.

This is the Official Page of Save Grange Lido Ltd, a Community Benefit Society (CBS) with charitable interests, a group of volunteers working to reinstate a stunning Art Deco Lido situated on the edge of Morecambe Bay. The Lido was built in 1932 and closed in 1993. It has a breath-taking location on the edge of the Lake District National Park looking over the stunning expanse of Morecambe Bay. It is the only surviving seaside Lido in the North of England.

Crossing Morecambe Bay, 1950s style! 🌊🏊

In the 1950s, swimming across Morecambe Bay was a popular - if very challenging - pursuit! Nowadays you can still get across the bay, but on foot with a guided Cross Bay Walk.

One thing hasn't changed: getting across the bay safely, with its changing currents and conditions, still depends on the expert guidance of local fishermen. Today, that's thanks to Michael Wilson of the Guide over Sands Trust πŸ‘

He'll be leading our annual Cross Bay Walk, which takes place this July. If you'd like to join us, you can book your space here: www.savegrangelido.co.uk/cross-bay-walk/

Take a journey through time with Grange Over Sands: The Loveliest Spot On The Lakeland Coast πŸŽ₯😍

Watch our video which explores the rich history of Grange over Sands, from its rise as a fashionable hydropathic seaside resort to memories made at Grange Baths and the story behind Wakes Weeks holidays.

Along the way, you’ll also hear a special song celebrating our town and its heritage.

A huge thank you to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for supporting this project, and to members Gary Cunliffe and Joe Dodd for compiling and producing the film.

Wakes Weeks in Grange over Sands πŸŠβ˜€

The arrival of the railway transformed Grange over Sands into a much loved seaside destination, and with the opening of Grange Lido in 1932, visitors had even more reason to flock to our coast.

⭐ Wakes Weeks began in the Middle Ages, later becoming an important annual holiday for working class communities as travel became more accessible.

⭐ As the industrial age changed everyday life, more people were able to enjoy time away for leisure and recreation.

⭐ During Wakes Weeks, mill towns across Lancashire would empty as families headed to the seaside for a well earned break, and Grange over Sands became a favourite destination for many.

🏊 Grange Lido played a huge role in many people's holidays from the moment it opened in 1932, creating memories for generations of visitors and locals alike. We believe it can do so again.

A sunny day at our lido would be just the thing with a heatwave on the cards! β˜€

On warm weekends like the one we have forecast, in its heyday Grange lido would have been bustling with visitors enjoying a refreshing dip.

Here are a few photos of people enjoying just that, from across the 1900s.
