We were absolutely delighted to find Nepeta Mussinii for sale at Alverstoke Village Hardware. This particular Nepeta (catmint) has been difficult to find. It loves full sun/well-drained soil; it is highly drought-tolerant once established. It is attractive to bees and other pollinators, and of course cats.

The sun shined on the green team this morning and just look at that deep blue sky setting off the blossom perfectly.
So much to do, the weeds (oops a plant in the wrong place I should say) are excelling themselves.

It is that time of year again when the box caterpillar has been spotted on the box hedging in Crescent Garden.
The green team started spraying the box with the nematode biological control today and will need to repeat the process in 2 weeks time.
This is just the start of the season.
More information on the moth can be found on the RHS website including a survey so they can monitor the sightings.

We are busy preparing for our annual plant sale on 16th May.
Just some of our preparation includes preparing bamboo bundles from bamboo grown in Crescent Garden.
Splitting and potting up plants that are growing in Crescent Garden.
We use our own compost made from leaf mulch and other organic matter.
Plus many other things which we will be sharing over the next few weeks.

What has been happening in the garden today ?

Anyone visiting the garden over the few couple of months will know our fountain, whilst cleaned, hasn’t been working.
This fix required prior knowledge, expertise and experience of the workings of the fountain and we are pleased to say today Don has brought all those qualities and the fountain is now working with the additional assistance of Tom.

The running and the maintenance costs for the fountain and the pump/tank are the official responsibility of Friends of Crescent Garden.
We thank ‘The Friends of Crescent Garden for continuing their membership which enables the fountain to bring pleasure to everyone who visits.

What else has the Green Team been up to ?

Rita has been diligently edging the area where the grass meets the Bredon gravel paths. This is an ongoing task but Rita is determined and has been known to be out in all weather apart from heavy rain. She is a real trooper.

What have the Green Team been up to ?

Trevor has been digging out the dead Buxus sempervirens (box), preparing the ground and replacing with 50 Taxus baccata (yew hedging plants)
It’s quite a big job so will be carried out over a number of weeks.

The box hedge was planted in 1999 along the railings enclosing the North Boundary.
Whilst it has held up well there has been damage caused by the box tree caterpillar (Cydalima perspectalis)

The signs of infestation include the appearance of white webbing on the leaves, damaged leaves which have been eaten or spotting the green, yellow and black caterpillars.
The majority of damage occurs between March and October.
The green team use nematode biological control to try to minimise the damage.

Taxus ‘is a very good choice for a box alternative, it is a classic hedging and topiary plant, looks very neat when clipped and has the ability to regrow well when cut into old wood.

What have the green team been up to today ?
One of the jobs has been cleaning out the fountain.
It's a mucky job but someone has to do it, well done team.

A little bit of history.
The fountain, a fluted column flanked by three dolphins was installed in 2002.
A significant central feature was needed, water was a missing element, the gravel hot and dusty in summer and importantly in memory of the lost bath houses so the fountain was the perfect choice.
It sits within the semi circular radius of the old reading room site.

Take a seat on one of the small benches in Crescent Garden.
This one is perfectly situated to admire the enchanting flowers of the magnolia.
The design of these benches was taken from contemporary illustrations and an
actual seat of the regency period seen at Sothebys (Loudon).
The benches were made by Peter Clutterbuck, an artist/blacksmith with careful accuracy.
Three of the small benches were given in memory of Friends by their families

Our own Rita Rundle has written about the very useful Vinca minor in this months Choice magazine.
Ours has been flowering since at least early January giving brightness to an otherwise shady area.
It’s interesting that most horticultural information states it starts flowering in Spring.
This is one of the shrubs we will have for sale at our annual plant sale on 16th May.
