What have the Green Team been up to ?
Trevor has been digging out the dead Buxus sempervirens (box), preparing the ground and replacing with 50 Taxus baccata (yew hedging plants)
It’s quite a big job so will be carried out over a number of weeks.
The box hedge was planted in 1999 along the railings enclosing the North Boundary.
Whilst it has held up well there has been damage caused by the box tree caterpillar (Cydalima perspectalis)
The signs of infestation include the appearance of white webbing on the leaves, damaged leaves which have been eaten or spotting the green, yellow and black caterpillars.
The majority of damage occurs between March and October.
The green team use nematode biological control to try to minimise the damage.
Taxus ‘is a very good choice for a box alternative, it is a classic hedging and topiary plant, looks very neat when clipped and has the ability to regrow well when cut into old wood.
