Our CEO, Lynn Laughland MBE, has written a thoughtful guest column for Home Care Insight on why care at home is one of the quiet foundations holding Scotland’s health and social care system together.

In the article, Lynn reflects on what it really means for someone to be supported in their own home: familiar surroundings, personal routines, trusted relationships and the small moments that help people continue to feel like themselves.

Care at home is often spoken about in terms of packages, hours and budgets. But at its heart, it is about people.

- It helps people remain safe and independent at home
- It supports unpaid carers and families
- It allows care workers to notice small changes before they become bigger concerns
- It helps reduce pressure on hospitals and wider services

As Lynn highlights, good care at home is not just support delivered to a person. It creates the conditions for someone to continue living their own life, in their own home, surrounded by the people and things that matter to them.

Our CEO, Lynn Laughland MBE, has written a powerful article for Health & Care Scotland on what Scotland’s new health and care ministers need to understand about care at home.

Lynn highlights three key points:

Waiting lists are not just an administrative issue. They represent people waiting for essential support.

Underinvesting in care at home does not save money. It simply moves the pressure elsewhere, often into hospitals and crisis services.

Independent and voluntary care providers are not separate from the system. They are a vital part of it.

Care at home supports people to live with dignity, independence and connection in their own homes. It also helps protect wider health and social care services by preventing avoidable deterioration, hospital admissions and delayed discharge.

As Lynn says, “Care at home is not a line in a budget. It is the infrastructure that makes everything else in Scotland’s health and care system possible.”
