To mark LGBT History Month Scotland, members from our network today attended a special guided tour of The Burrell Collection showcasing LGBTQ+ histories from within the collection. Absolutely fantastic to see and learn more about these fascinating items. Thanks to Laura, our amazing tour guide 💜

We’re very pleased to report that the Scottish Parliament has just passed the Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Bill, by 82 votes to 32. The SNP, Labour, the Greens and the LibDems voted for the bill, while the Conservatives voted against, plus we think 2 or 3 MSPs in other parties who voted against their party position. (The list of who voted which way will be available later)

The bill was very much improved by amendments at stage 2, and again at stage 3 yesterday. Those included removing section 12 from the bill, which was seen as encouraging sexual orientation conversion therapy.

We were pleased to see that all the amendments that we supported were passed yesterday, and all the amendments that we opposed were rejected, including ones that would have undermined the bill for trans people. You can read our briefing on that here:https://www.equality-network.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Hate-Crime-Bill-Equality-Network-Scottish-Trans-Alliance-briefing.pdf

It will be a while before the bill comes into effect. Meanwhile the Working Group on Misogyny and Criminal Justice has started meeting and will consider how to address misogynistic harassment, abuse and other crime. We strongly support rapid action on that.

Of course legislation is only part of the answer to hate crime. We also need public awareness raising, police training, effective prosecution and sentencing, and monitoring.

But this bill is a really important step forwards. Thank you to everyone who supported it.

Following the victory in the US today, we really need a victory here too.

We are hearing that the PM has not yet signed off on proposed plans to roll back trans equality reported by the media on Sunday.

You can help by urging Boris not to take forward any of these potential anti-trans proposals. Go to https://email.number10.gov.uk and ask him not to go ahead with rolling back trans equality.

About Us

Hello! We are the LGBTI+ and Straight Allies Employee Led Network of Scotland's largest local authority, Glasgow City Council (GCC). The network's aims are simple: we want to attract, support and develop our Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex colleagues so that they feel confident to be themselves at work. The '+' is for those who identify as asexual, pansexual, nonbinary, and any other sexual, romantic or gender identity. The network provides the opportunity for LGBTI+ colleagues - and their straight allies - to get together and discuss relevant topics, share ideas, insights and experiences. We also drive positive change within GCC by working with senior managers, elected members and the council administration with a vision to make Glasgow the best city in Scotland for LGBTI+ people. We’ve got lots planned for 2018 and beyond, please ‘like’ our page to join us on our journey! You can also follow us on Twitter @gccprism If you’ve any questions, you can contact us at [email protected]
