The Home Secretary told conference that 3,800 additional officers have been put into neighbourhood policing across the country.

The Government is also planning a National Police Service for serious national and international crime while reviewing the structure of local policing.

For Gateshead, day-to-day policing remains the responsibility of Northumbria Police rather than Gateshead Council.

This is therefore another area where it is important to distinguish national Labour Government policy from decisions made by the Reform-led council.

SAFETY MATTERS. PREJUDICE DOESNโ€™T.

We want to address something important.

At Dean Taxis, we understand that passengers place their trust in us every time they book a journey.

That trust matters.

And we recognise that questions about driver safety, licensing and professional conduct deserve serious attention.

But thereโ€™s another issue that deserves the same honesty.

Racism and religious discrimination towards taxi drivers.

Our booking teams have experienced requests from passengers who donโ€™t want a driver because theyโ€™re foreign or Muslim.

And we believe itโ€™s important to make our position clear.

A driverโ€™s nationality does not determine their professionalism.

Their religion does not determine their character.

And their skin colour does not determine whether theyโ€™re capable of providing a safe and reliable service.

We will always take genuine concerns about driver conduct and passenger safety seriously.

Appropriate licensing and background-check requirements are important, and concerns about compliance should be addressed through the proper channels.

But those concerns must be based on facts and conduct, not assumptions about someoneโ€™s identity.

There is a difference between accountability and discrimination.

We will never dismiss a legitimate complaint.

Equally, we will never accept racism being presented as a reasonable passenger preference.

Our drivers work hard to serve Gateshead and the surrounding communities.

Our booking staff work hard to support those journeys.

Both deserve to be treated with dignity.

We are committed to professional standards, passenger confidence and a respectful working environment for everyone.

And that means standing firmly against discrimination in every form.

We welcome genuine questions. We welcome constructive feedback. We do not welcome racism.

The Labour Government announced that its Warm Homes programme will be increasingly devolved to mayors and local government through what it is calling the Great Home Upgrade.

That could fund measures such as insulation, cleaner heating, solar power and wider improvements to homes and neighbourhoods.
Great British Energy is also launching a ยฃ1 billion Local Power Plan intended to help councils and communities own and generate energy locally.

For Gateshead this is potentially significant because more decisions could be made in the North East rather than Whitehall.
But where responsibility ultimately sits with Gateshead Council, the current Reform UK administration would decide how the borough engages with those opportunities.

We will be watching.

I wear red almost every day. Red tie, red socks, red(ish) glasses. But today Iโ€™ve got plenty of company!

Itโ€™s Show Racism The Red Cardโ€™s Wear Red Day, and schools, workplaces and communities across the country are wearing red to support the charityโ€™s work tackling racism.

Founded here in the North East 30 years ago, Show Racism The Red Card works with young people to challenge racism and prejudice before they take root. Schools across Gateshead have benefited from that work, and many are wearing red today.

Iโ€™m pleased that colleagues from across the House of Commons have come together to show their support too.

Itโ€™s disappointing that Gateshead Council has refused to light the Millennium Bridge red this year. Tackling racism shouldnโ€™t be a party-political issue, and supporting a charity that helps children understand and challenge prejudice shouldnโ€™t be controversial.

Wearing red for a day wonโ€™t end racism. But education, challenging prejudice and standing together as communities can make a real difference.

Every child in Gateshead deserves to grow up feeling safe, welcome and part of our community. Thatโ€™s something worth standing up for.

Are you wearing red today?
