Great post from our colleagues Chorley Fire Station giving an insight into our Breathing Apparatus training and the conditions we train for.

🔥 Breathing Apparatus Training – Understanding Flashover 🔥

On-call firefighters from across the county are currently undertaking their Initial Breathing Apparatus (BA) training — a course that all operational firefighters complete as part of their training and development.

As part of the course, firefighters are taught how to recognise, respond to and mitigate the signs of a flashover — one of the most dangerous phenomena firefighters can encounter at a fire.

🔥 So, what is a flashover?

A flashover occurs when the heat within a compartment fire becomes so intense that combustible materials and gases throughout the room reach their ignition temperature almost simultaneously. This can result in the fire rapidly transitioning from a localised fire to full-room involvement in a matter of seconds.

Firefighters are trained to recognise the warning signs of an impending flashover, including increasing heat, changes in smoke conditions and the behaviour of the fire. Through effective firefighting techniques, including correct use of the branch, ventilation considerations and cooling of hot gases, crews can work to reduce the likelihood and severity of flashover.

BA training is a vital part of ensuring our firefighters have the knowledge, skills and confidence required to operate safely in some of the most challenging environments they may encounter.

🪜🚒 Keeping our skills current 🚒🪜

Tonight, Firefighters from Garstang Fire Station joined our colleagues from Fleetwood Green Watch for an evening of training with the 13.5 metre ladder.

The session included:
🪜 Straight ladder pitches
🪜 Simulated restricted ladder pitches
🤝 Teamwork and communication
✅ Safe systems of work

The evening culminated in a scenario-based exercise, bringing together the skills learned during the session into a realistic scenario designed to simulate an operational response.

Earlier this year, we asked our communities, partners and employees what matters most to them. We've used that feedback to develop our draft plan, and now we're inviting your views as part of the second phase of our consultation.

🚒 A change of scenery for the crew at Garstang Fire Station yesterday evening.

📟 Our crew were mobilised to Agecroft Fire Station in Salford to provide standby cover in support of our colleagues at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) while Fire crews continued to tackle the on going wildfires at Dovestone Reservoir.

🚨 Standby moves like this help ensure emergency cover is maintained whenever neighbouring Fire and Rescue Services require additional support.

🚨 Whilst on standby, our crew were also mobilised to an incident in Preston before returning to Garstang at 2330

🔥 A busy morning for the crew at Garstang Fire Station

This morning, shortly after attending a road traffic collision, we were mobilised to reports of a campfire at a local beauty spot.

On arrival, we found the fire had already been extinguished and there was no further action required. 👍

🌞 While there was no immediate danger on this occasion, it serves as a timely reminder that the recent spell of hot, dry weather has left grass, woodland and undergrowth across Lancashire much more susceptible to fire. It only takes a small spark or an ember to ignite dry vegetation.

🚒 Every emergency call requires firefighters and appliances that may then be unavailable for another incident elsewhere. By making safe, responsible choices, we can all help reduce unnecessary call-outs and keep emergency resources available for those who need them most.

If you're enjoying the outdoors this summer, please remember: 💧 Leave the disposable BBQ at home and consider a picnic. 🚮 Take all litter home, particularly glass bottles. 🚭 Dispose of ci******es safely and never throw them into dry vegetation. ☀️ Take extra care during periods of hot, dry weather.

🏏 That's not cricket... or is it? 👀

👀 If you spotted us at Garstang Cricket Club this evening, there's no cause for alarm! We were kindly given permission to use the facilities for one of our weekly training night exercises, and we'd like to thank the club for their support and hospitality.

🚒 This evening's drill focused on hose management, search and rescue, casualty extraction and ventilation. Training away from the station gives us the opportunity to work in unfamiliar surroundings, adapt to different building layouts and continue developing the skills that help us respond safely and effectively when our community needs us most.

📚 You may remember we recently congratulated one of our firefighters on achieving Competent Firefighter status after completing their development portfolio. While that's an important milestone, it certainly isn't the end of the journey. Competence isn't something that's achieved once – it's maintained through regular training, realistic scenarios and continual learning throughout a firefighter's career.

🤝 A huge thank you to everyone at Garstang Sports Club for their support and for allowing us to use their fantastic facilities.

🎉🚒 35 Years of Garstang Fire Station on Green Lane! 🚒🎉

📅 Today marks 35 years since Garstang Fire Station officially opened at its current home on Green Lane.

❤️ Over the past three and a half decades, countless firefighters and members of our community have passed through our doors. Many have given their time, commitment and dedication to serving Garstang, making Lancashire safer and helping others in their moments of greatest need.

🥳 Congratulations to Fire Fighter Smart on achieving Competent Firefighter status today following three years of hard work, dedication and commitment which culminated in a demanding end point assessment.

🧑🏻‍🚒 Alongside his role as an on-call firefighter at Garstang, FF Smart has achieved this milestone whilst also working full-time as an Industrial Firefighter within the nuclear industry – no small feat.

🧑🏻‍🚒 During his time with us, Andrew has become a key member of the crew, qualifying as both an Emergency Response Driver and BA Team Leader. His professionalism, commitment and positive attitude make him a great asset to the station and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.

👏🏻 Well done, Andrew. A thoroughly deserved achievement, and we wish you every success in your future career with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.

🚒 Thank You for Joining Us at Our Open Day! 🚒

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our Open Day today. It was fantastic to see so many members of the community supporting the station, meeting the crew, and learning more about the work we do.

We hope you enjoyed the day as much as we enjoyed welcoming you.
If you spot yourself, your family, or your friends in any of the photos, feel free to tag yourselves and share them with others.

We would also like to extend a special thank you to all of the firefighters, family members and volunteers who gave up their Sunday to help organise and run the event. These events take a lot of planning and effort behind the scenes and simply wouldn't be possible without your commitment and support.

A special thank you to Firefighter Pentz for leading on the organisation of this year's Open Day. Your hard work behind the scenes helped make the day possible and contributed greatly to its success.

Finally, thank you to all of the organisations, businesses, volunteers and partner agencies who joined us throughout the day. There are too many to mention individually, but your support is greatly appreciated and helped make the event such a success.
