💧 WATER 💦

I am meeting the new Chief Executive Officer of South West Water next week.

I have a litany of complaints and sewage spill reports from constituents and parish councils and have already raised some of these, particularly about dry spills, in advance with SWW and been told the monitors are faulty. I have a list of issues in the areas as set out in the letter attached, but I know there are more.

Please contact me on [email protected] with other specific issues & concerns you want me to raise.

This Labour Government has already passed laws on criminalising spills, banning bonuses and against self monitoring. There is a huge Clean Water Bill coming in the autumn to merge the regulators and give the new regulator real teeth 🦷

DEFRA is also looking closely at how the Special Administration procedure could work for failing water companies and other forms of ownership for the future. I am particularly interested as a Co-operative Party MP in mutual and cooperative ownership of water. 💧 Obviously water is not a commodity that ever should have been privatised.
See this article for details of the proposals - https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/aug/01/turn-failing-water-firms-into-not-for-profit-cooperatives-mps-and-mayors-tell-pm

Falmouth is one of the first places getting some of the substantial infrastructure investment that the Government secured.

The new attenuation tank in Gylly carpark will cut spills from that combined sewage overflow (CSO) by 95%.
16 other CSOs in Falmouth are getting fixed over the next 18 months too. Obviously other areas need huge amount of investment too, but it is now happening in Falmouth.

I am continually in contact with SW Water raising your concerns and will produce a full report after my meeting with the new CEO next week.

In Cornwall it should not say British, it should say Cornish. We suffer from so many people of all wealth bands moving to Cornwall displacing local people. This Reform policy won’t help Cornwall.

It appears that being single, disabled, old, gay makes you not worthy!

More than a bit surprised they don’t have an acceptable colour chart.

If you haven’t signed this petition, please do. It takes two minutes.

Petition: Add a tick box for "Cornish" in the 2031 census for national identity question

To add a "Cornish" tick box to the 2031 census for the question on national identity. Instead of Cornish people being forced to write it in the "Other" category.

Sometimes I wonder if Cornish folk carry ‘drekly’ too far and things never actually take place. A petition to obtain an answer from the Westminster government for a tickbox on the 2031 census for Cornish people is really poorly supported. This has been promoted widely on social media as well as previously in Cornish newspapers and has just over 5,000 signatures. It requires ten-thousand to receive a government response and 100,000 to be debated in parliament.

Are there now so few Cornish people, or they are so technically inept and unable to access the website. Perhaps for many it’s all talk of how they are so proud to be Cornish but can’t find the time to do anything about it. The Cornish are a legally acknowledged national minority along with our Celtic neighbours in Scotland, Wales and Ireland, all who will have a tickbox on the census. Why should Cornwall miss out and our folk have to work around a more involved route leading so many to not say they are Cornish. Come on folks let’s take a couple of minutes to sign the petition at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/761116.

Cornish people by birth or choice need to stand and be counted in the next census. Let’s increase the number who say they’re Cornish from a relatively low 18% of Cornwall’s population, also encouraging Cornwall’s expats across the whole of the UK, helped by a Cornish tickbox. We also ask for support from our Celtic cousins from across the UK, your help would be most appreciated.
