The National Year of Reading 2026 continues with June’s theme: Locally Grown

We’re celebrating stories with Dorset roots—showcasing authors born here and tales inspired by our local landscapes.
At Ferndown Library, you’ll find a fantastic range of Dorset-inspired reads, from classics like Thomas Hardy to contemporary voices, alongside themed displays, recommendations, and opportunities to get creative.

- browse themed displays and curated recommendations
- discover local authors
- get inspired to write your own Dorset story

Visit us this month, pick up a locally inspired read, and share your favourites with us!
Let’s grow a love of reading together in our community

Join us this week as we highlight two of our welcoming monthly groups—both supporting connection, confidence and a love of reading as part of Hi-Vis Fortnight (1–14 June), celebrating services for visually impaired people.

Tuesday – Eye to Eye Group
A friendly, supportive space for people with visual impairments to connect, share experiences, and enjoy activities together.

Wednesday – Reading Friends: Reading Your Way
A relaxed and inclusive group where you can enjoy reading in a way that suits you—whether that’s listening, sharing, or simply being part of the conversation.

Everyone is welcome—come along, get involved, and discover how your library supports accessible reading and social connection.

Looking for something a little magical?
The Elsewhere Train is a beautifully imaginative story about a mysterious train that can take you to the places your heart longs for most. Blending fantasy, romance and adventure, it’s a perfect escape for readers who love a touch of wonder.
Raya, having abandoned her song writing dreams after her brother's death, is whisked away on the train, which serves as a refuge for those adrift in life. The train is full of wonders, including a boarding car meadow and a dining car with lily pads.

A great choice if you enjoy enchanting journeys and thought-provoking “what if” stories.
I chose to read the large print version to support my needs.

Pop into Ferndown Library to discover this title and more staff favourites—and feel free to ask me (Kirsty, Team Leader) if you’d like to know more about it!
