Their impact keeps growing. 🎬

What began as an Essex Police media day became a hands‑on filmmaking experience: young people from Epping Forest scripted, directed, filmed and edited their first‑ever film – and have now learned their work helped shape a national campaign. One of the scripts they reviewed and developed, Deepfake, is featured in Essex Police & BT’s Fake or Real? Know the Deal campaign – a powerful example of youth voice influencing public safety messaging.

This project was about far more than technical skills; it was about listening, building trust and creating space for young people to shape the conversations that affect them. We are incredibly proud of their creativity, professionalism and courage, and grateful to Essex Police for centring youth in the process.

Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉

On the 13th December 2004, when Band Aid 20 topped the charts with their re-recording of the 1984 classic, PC Karen West was just starting her career with Essex Police.

Ready to make a difference she was initially posted to Neighbourhood Policing Team, learning her core policing skills before moving on to the Town Patrol Unit where she was awarded for having the highest arrest rate in the area.

After developing further skills in Harlow she moved over to Forest District, where she has remained right up to today spending most of her career being dedicated to this district.

She started on the response team that worked from the old Epping Policing Station, then moved over to Waltham Abbey where she was assigned a beat which started her journey back into Neighbourhood Policing. Shortly after Karen moved over to Loughton and became the Beat Officer, becoming very well known and respected in the area due to her commitment and dedication.

Karen also spent a period of time as the Missing Person Liaison officer for Epping Forest District, working again at Epping Police Station, before the role was civilianised in 2016 when she returned to the Neighbourhood Policing Team taking back her previous beat officer position in Buckhurst Hill.

In 2021 she was successful in taking on the role of Community Safety and Engagement Officer for the district. The role she still holds today, where she is key to our engagement within communities, our partnership work, and shaping the way Neighbourhood Policing target the key issues and areas across Epping Forest.

Today Karen was awarded for 20 years exemplary service. We are extremely proud of the decades of commitment she has given the district, which is certainly a much safer place to live and work with PC Karen West here.

🎬 Their First-Ever Film Is Live! 🎬

For the first time, young people from Epping Forest stepped into the world of filmmaking—learning, experimenting, and delivering something truly special. You can now watch their debut video on the Essex Police YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/Io0jByjrSGU

This was a completely new experience for all involved—none of these young people had ever created a film before. Despite having no prior experience, they scripted, directed, filmed, photographed, and edited an informational sketch with remarkable creativity and professionalism.

They also engaged in meaningful discussions about crime and policing—sharing their views on key issues that matter to young people. Their fresh perspectives contributed valuable feedback on forthcoming campaigns designed to help keep young communities across Essex safe.

These experiences are about more than just learning—they foster trust, confidence, and stronger connections between young people and the police. Through open dialogue, representation, and inclusivity, we continue paving the way for meaningful change across generations, cultures, abilities, gender, and race.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making this happen! This is just the beginning—we look forward to more opportunities to amplify young voices and strengthen communities.

Building Bridges Between Young People and the Police

Last week, Lisa Leonce had the privilege of taking young people from Epping Forest to visit the Essex Police Media Team. It was an insightful and engaging experience, fostering meaningful connections between youth and the police service.

Throughout the day, the young people met officers, police dogs, and staff at HQ, gaining firsthand insight into policing. They explored the history behind the Police Race Action Plan (PRAP) and visited the police museum, deepening their understanding of key events that have shaped policing today.

They also had a practical introduction to photography and filming—creating a script, filming, directing, and editing an informational sketch. Additionally, they provided valuable feedback on a future script aimed at young people.

These interactions are more than just experiences—they are steps toward greater trust, confidence, and awareness between young people and the police service. By fostering open dialogue, representation, and inclusivity across generations, cultures, abilities, gender, and race, we pave the way for meaningful change.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making this happen. I look forward to continuing to build relationships that strengthen communities and empower leaders at every level.

🌟 Members at Essex Police Towards Excellence Conference 2025 🌟

We were honoured to attend and present at the Essex Police Towards Excellence Conference 2025, where leaders, community representatives, and policing professionals came together to discuss key strategies for building trust, awareness, and confidence in policing.

At Epping Forest & Brentwood IAG, we play a vital role in ensuring that community voices are heard in policing matters. Through our engagement work—including youth discussion groups and intergenerational conversations—we provide a platform for open dialogue, challenge perceptions, and work towards fostering stronger relationships between the police and the communities they serve.

Inclusion is at the heart of what we do. Our IAG proudly includes youth members, ensuring that young people have a seat at the table when shaping policing policies that impact them. Representation matters, and by embracing diverse perspectives, we create meaningful change that benefits everyone.

A huge thank you to Essex Police for hosting such an impactful event. We look forward to continuing our work in driving inclusivity, accountability, and engagement across our local communities.

🌟 Engaging with Our Community at Loughton Police Station Open Day 🌟

What a fantastic day at the Loughton Police Station Open Day on 28 May! It was great to see so many local families, businesses, and organisations come together, creating an engaging and welcoming space for all. A huge thank you to Essex Police and all the leaders who supported the day.

The day was filled with exciting activities—from interactive talks by forensics, fi****ms, and dog sections to children trying on police uniforms and experiencing police vehicles firsthand. A special highlight was the guest appearance from retired Police Dog and Crufts Hero Dog of the Year winner, Baloo, alongside her handler Mandy! 🐶✨

We at Epping Forest & Brentwood IAG were delighted to meet residents, share what we do, and discuss how people can get involved in helping shape community policing. Our IAG is proud to include youth members, ensuring that the perspectives of young people are heard and valued in conversations that impact their communities. By fostering open dialogue and trust, we aim to strengthen relationships between local residents and Essex Police.
