Visitor Centre & Cafe

Delve into the enchanting six acres of Myddelton House Gardens and discover the compelling story of one of Britain’s most famous self-taught gardeners, artists and expert botanists - Edward Augustus Bowles. He lived in Myddelton House from 1865 to 1954 and dedicated much of his life to transforming the gardens with his love of unusual and exotic plants. There’s an impressive range of flora and fauna to stimulate the senses each season. Explore the unusual plants of the Lunatic Asylum, newly restored Kitchen Garden, colourful Alpine Meadow and the extensive snowdrop collection which bring the gardens to life during February. The gardens are also home to a beautiful carp lake, a Victoria conservatory and a number of historical artefacts collected and treasured by Mr Bowles, including pieces from the original St Paul’s Cathedral and the Enfield Market Cross.

Yesterday was a sad day for those of us that love Myddelton House Gardens.

Two of our historic Scots Pine trees that had been part of the gardens since before the early 1900s were felled as they had reached the end of their lives and were at increased risk of collapse.

Records dating to the beginning of the last century show the trees in maturity, so were well over 100 years old, and some of the last from the wooded area that used to inhabit the gardens during the time of their creator, Edward Augustus Bowles. One of the trees felled had been struck by lightning during its lifetime leaving a giant scar along its trunk.

Before the works took place, the trees were surveyed for bats by an ecologist and works were undertaken with care to minimise impact on other wildlife in the gardens.

Although these old friends will no longer be a part of the garden’s skyline, their wood will be used in the Arboretum to create wildlife habitats and seating.

Take a listen to Steve from to learn more about the works and the trees in the gardens. 🌲💚
