Here is Calderdale Council’s class of 2023. Diverse, dynamic and drawn from all parts of the borough. There are 28 Labour councillors in Calderdale, up from just 9 in 2007 when Tim Swift became leader. Also in this year’s class but unable to make the photo we’re Danielle Durrans and Israr Ahmed.

Today the leader of Calderdale council Tim Swift announced he is standing down. You can read the full press release below.

Councillor Tim Swift announced his intention to step down as Leader of Calderdale Council at the Labour group Annual General Meeting (AGM) last night. He has held the position since 2012. Councillor Jane Scullion is due to formally take on the role of Leader following the Annual Council meeting on 17th May. Councillor Swift is set to be appointed as Deputy Leader.
Councillor Swift said: “When I first became Leader of the Labour group in 2007 we were the third party with just 9 councillors. I always believed that we would rebuild to lead the Council, but I could never have predicted the extraordinary journey that would follow.

“Looking back, it is amazing to reflect that we have now secured the ninth consecutive year of unbroken Labour leadership of the Council; and the fifth with an overall majority. The recent election results show the people of Calderdale support our vision for the future.

“We have delivered on our Labour priorities. We were the first West Yorkshire council to become a Living Wage employer; one of the first councils in the country to introduce broad urban 20mph speed limits; and have been at the forefront of tackling the climate emergency. We have secured huge investments including transforming the Piece Hall, and we recognised the importance of town partnerships long before the Government. We have achieved all of this whilst leading our borough through a global pandemic; three massive and devastating floods; and now the worst cost of living crisis for a generation.
“Knowing when to make a change is always one of the hardest things to do; but I have decided now is the right time for me to stand down. I remain completely committed to our great borough, and look forward to supporting Jane in her new role as Leader.”

Councillor Scullion has been Deputy Leader of the Council for 4 years and held several Cabinet roles including Resources and most recently Regeneration. She became a councillor in 2016, following a long career in local government.
Councillor Scullion said: “We look to the future with an ambitious and clear Labour vision for Calderdale, building on our existing priorities of tackling inequalities and climate change and promoting thriving towns.

She added: “In pursuing these important goals I am delighted that Tim will remain as Deputy Leader, providing invaluable experience and continuity for the coming year.”

Labour is the ruling group on Calderdale Council, having retained 10 seats at the local elections last week. They currently hold 28 seats on the Council, 5 more than all the other political parties combined. Councillor Tim Swift was awarded an MBE in 2018 in recognition of his contribution to local government and the regeneration of Halifax.

More excellent news for Elland!!!

Elland Railway Station received planning permission from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority yesterday.

Calderdale have championed this scheme with the Labour cabinet funding the feasibility study that led to the project being okayed.

It’s full steam ahead for a more connected and sustainable Elland (well obviously not Steam, but full diesel ahead doesn’t sound quite right).

Councillor Jane Scullion will be an awesome leader at Calderdale Council and will continue the excellent work of her predecessor!!!

ALL CHANGE AT CALDERDALE
Today Tim Swift has announced he’s standing down as leader of Calderdale council with deputy leader Jane Scullion elected unopposed by Labour councillors to replace him.

When Tim took over the Labour group in 2007 we had 7 councillors. We have now had 9 years of unbroken leadership and 28 councillors. He leaves Calderdale stronger for his work. From the completion of the Piece Hall, 20 mile speed limits, to us being the first West Yorkshire council to be a living wage employer. He achieved this while responding to 3 devastating floods, unprecedented austerity and a pandemic. Tim has done all of this with a steady hand, good judgment and sound instincts. As formidable at full council as he is without ego in person. I’m glad he’s going to remain part of our top team as deputy.

Jane Scullion as deputy leader of Calderdale brings a wealth of experience to her new role as leader. She has a forensic eye for detail and impeccable guiding principles. From my work with her in cabinet I feel like she’s going to bring an ambitious long term vision to Calderdale. She has played key roles in our financial stability and leadership on the environment.

We are a remarkable community, from our beautiful scenery, unmatched history to our dynamic businesses. Calderdale has an exciting future and I can’t wait to be part of it.

Thank you to you all for voting for me!

We didn’t win of course but we did increase our vote by an amazing 25% which is not a bad result!

We are now on a GE footing and will be planning our strategy at a meeting on July 7th.

Clearly Labour are the largest party in Calderdale and we must build on this to get a Labour councillor into Greetland And Stainland and a Labour MP into Parliament!

We hope you will join us and help us to get a Labour victory in Greetland and Stainland and in Calderdale!
