Save 1 - 6 Canonmills Bridge

Save 1 - 6 Canonmills Bridge The campaign group is channelling the community outrage at the appalling deficit of democracy in the appeal process. Please email us to be kept informed.

Save 1-6 Canonmills Bridge campaign started in May 2015 in a bid to stop the demolition of this small, well loved landmark at the heart of Canonmills. After a summer of campaigning, on 26th August 2015, the campaign team, together with the Inverleith Society, local community council representatives and politicians, were successful in persuading the City of Edinburgh Council Development Management

Committee of the value of the existing building to the area – the Planning Committee voted unanimously against demolition. Appeal by Glovart Ltd
The developers appealed the decision against demolition, so an independent Reporter was appointed by the Department of Planning and Environment Appeals (DPEA). On 28th January 2016, the DPEA gave its decision – demolition of 1-6 Canonmills Bridge has been approved. The Reporter concurred with the owners and developers (rather than the unanimous planning committee and 7,000+ signatories we gathered). The decision notice is available on the DPEA website: https://www.dpea.scotland.gov.uk/CaseDetails.aspx?id

The building is now set for demolition and replacement by the approved development as a mixed use (retail/café and residential) 4 storey block, according to plans ALREADY APPROVED by the council in 2010. It is the view of the campaign group and the wider community that the proposed building is not in keeping with the surrounding conservation area and will not in any way enhance the neighbouring area. Now – challenging the appeal outcome
The campaign group is currently serving as a channel for community outrage at the appalling deficit of democracy in the appeal process. We are engaging with politicians and the local and wider community who are united in their determination to stop the demolition. We are consulting widely and exploring a range of options that will be revealed at the appropriate time. If you feel strongly about this issue, please:

1-6 Canonmills Bridge is now poised for demolition prior to the er****on of a 4 storey development as per the existing unpopular planning permission. Representatives from our group recently met new owner Andrew Peters (Melford Developments), and Craig Walker (Walker Homes), who purchased the site with full planning permission late last year and argue they cannot risk spending the next several years obtaining fresh permissions on new or revised plans. Recognising the existing building would not be retained, our group had approached the Scottish Land Fund, hoping to create momentum for the integration of a small civic space and an extension to the Water of Leith walkway (in line with waterside development policy) as part of a revised development plan. Alas, there is no prospect of this being taken forwards.
Thanks to everyone who supported the campaign over the past 3 years. We are just one of many controversial sites across Edinburgh that highlight the shortcomings of Edinburgh City Council planning and current planning policy – but one small corner that 1000s feel passionately about. We created community and left no stone unturned in our efforts to undo the (now widely acknowledged) bad ECC planning decision of 2009. While we effectively persuaded the 2015 planning committee to overturn the earlier decision through exploiting a technicality and demonstrating public outrage, we were thwarted when the Scottish Government Reporter found in favour of the developers. We have since challenged the council on numerous irregularities in the planning process and urged them to revoke the original permission but while even the Ombudsman recognises the legitimacy of aspects of our case, the development is certainly set to go ahead.

Last chance for councillors to show they care about Canonmills... This notice appeared on cars, parked in 1-6 Canonmills Bridge yard on 29 November. Meanwhile, we're still waiting for the council to respond to a legal opinion, submitted 3 months ago, regarding the legality of the development, and on other issues...

Earthy is closing on Monday, September 4th... Locals will have noticed the site is 'To Let'. Any takers?
In any case, there may still be a way to achieve a more sympathetic solution for the site than the currently approved but some way off development. We are continuing to explore avenues and rely on your support...

2 years ago we won a battle but not the war…

CAMPAIGNERS fighting to stop a popular restaurant being bulldozed to make way for a “bland” block of flats have won the right to put their case direct to the committee which will decide the issue.

Our campaign group has resisted the demolition of 1-6 CB/bland over-development on the site for 2+ years. We have exploited all possible avenues to halt the unpopular scheme, very publicly and behind the scenes – latterly we worked with a renowned architect to develop an alternative proposal that would have offered more benefit to the community, acknowledging the Water of Leith setting/incorporating a riverside walkway ...
Alas, the owner/developers are making ready to proceed with their redevelopment and Earthy will close after the festival. http://earthyfoodsandgoods.weebly.com/news.html
