We do not know why King Mswati suddenly has the urge to end teenage pregnancies or whether he genuinely wants to.
This is because Mswati is the primary cause of this scourge. Through his greed, he denies hundreds of thousands of little girls the opportunity to attend school, and through his actions, he sets a very bad example of pe******ia.
KING MSWATI, THE PE*****LE
In 2005, King Mswati forced a 16-year-old child, Nothando Dube, to quit school so she could be his 12th wife.
At the time she left school, she was still in grade 9 (form 2). She went on to live a miserable, lonely life before she allegedly died of cancer at age 31.
This was not an isolated incident. King Mswati prefers young, impressionable women. His latest wife, Siphelele Mashwama, quit college at 18 to join the king’s ever-expanding harem.
HOW ROYAL EXCESS DEPRIVES CHILDREN OF EDUCATION
There is a clear, well-documented link between high school enrollment and teenage pregnancies. This is why Eswatini has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the region – high school enrollment is lowest.
When children between the ages of 14 and 19 spend their time doing household chores instead of being at school, they revert to unprotected s*x. Their young minds are not yet even aware of the potential lifetime consequences of their actions – hence the law says they cannot consent.
Why is the government reluctant to fund high school education? They cite a lack of funds. Eswatini is a country that:
• Spends E6.3 billion on the royal family
• Spends E100 million every year on the King’s birthday
• Has the highest-paid parliamentarians
• Spends millions on rituals and ceremonies
• Spends billions on useless parastatals
Yet this country says it does not have enough funds to fund the most important social need – education.
LEADERSHIP FAILURE
This is a leadership failure, poor governance, selfishness, and Umkhuba Wekuhhalatisa. Eswatini’s government must fund ALL public high school education. No top-up, just fund it so all children can go to school.
