Press Release - Update on the refurbishment of Pevensey Sport Pavilion ⚽️🏏🏗️

Pevensey Parish Council (PPC) and the Pevensey and Westham sports club are pleased to announce an ambitious project to refurbish and modernise the Sports Pavilion at Pevensey Recreation Ground, ensuring it remains a vibrant and valued asset for the community for decades to come.

The pavilion was built in the 1970’s and currently hosts approximately 480 sporting members. This comprises of three sporting sections, Pevensey and Westham Football Club, Pevensey Cricket Club and the Pevensey Rookies Stoolball club. The sheer number of physical activity hours undertaken by all ages and genders demonstrates the commitment, benefits and need to have this well-loved community asset.

The works required.
The existing pavilion has reached a point where significant upgrades are required to meet modern standards. The project aims to tackle urgent repairs and refurbishment that include, removing the roof and re-roofing, external refurbishment of the existing building, remodeling of the interior, interior fit out, including the installation of disabled facilities and access and associated external works, drainage and utility connections. The cost for the refurbishment is £459,875

In addition to the building costs, PPC appointed a number of professional companies, which the council has paid for and is in the region of £40,000. Throughout this process PPC has succeeded in obtaining planning permission for the refurbishment; completed the governmental formal tender/procurement process and appointed a contractor. The contractor appointed was Hawes Construction Group.

PPC is currently working actively to secure funding from various sources. PPC is very grateful to have received successfuls bid from the John Jackson Charitable Trust (£68,449) and the Football foundation (£25,000). Other applications for funding are being submitted from bodies such as Wealden’s District Council and Suez Landfill Trust. PPC already spent in excess of £40,000 and has committed a further £75,000 from reserves to meet match funding requirements for current grant applications.

How to Support
The sports club is also launching a public fundraising campaigns. The Pevensey and Westham football club have successfully raised £5,000 from a sponsored colour run which took place at the Pevensey Recreation Ground. Each individual football team has also set fundraising goals which include sponsored walks and running quizzes. The Pevensey cricket club are saving from match fees, arranging various fundraising events from quizzes, race nights and are having a charity game at the end of the season.
The club has created a dedicated just giving page, inviting local businesses and residents to support the project.

Residents can view the progress initial project plans and learn how to support the campaign on the Parish Council website at https://pevenseyparishcouncil.gov.uk/pavilion-project-wallsend-road/ or by attending the monthly parish council meetings held on the 1st Tuesday of the Month at St Wilfrid’s Church hall.

PR - Queen Elizabeth's 100 year memorial.

PEVENSEY REMEMBERS

21 April 2026 was the Centenary of the late Queen Elizabeth’s Birthday. Pevensey Parish Council marked this day by placing a posy of Lily of the Valley and Forget-me-not flowers on the Memorial at the East Gate of Pevensey Castle.

Lily of the Valley were the late Queen’s favourite flowers and are only available for a short time during the year. Kevin Loveland, our local florist and Head Gardner at St Wilfrid’s Hospice provided the posy from flowers in the garden at the Hospice.

The Memorial was installed following the visit of the late Queen to Pevensey in September 1966, which marked the 900 year anniversary of the arrival of William the Conqueror (Guillaume of Normandy) in 1066. The Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the story of the invasion is being brought to the UK in September where it will be displayed at the British Museum until the Summer of 2027. 2027 is also to be known as the Year of the Normans. Pevensey is marked on the Tapestry by showing Guillaume on his way “Ad Pevensae” , so our parish is an important part of British history. Pevensey Parish Council encourages local businesses and organisations to mark the arrival of the Tapestry for our local residents and for what we hope will be an increased number visitors to the area.

Peter Lowton, Chairman of Pevensey Parish Council, shown in the picture at the Memorial on 21 April, said “ Ad Pevensae, is the Latin meaning “to Pevensey” and the landing of the Normans in our historic village in 1066, is significant for the whole of the UK. It was fitting to remember the late Queen, who was 26 generations later than William, on what would have been her 100th birthday, after a lifetime of dedicated service”
