Join us this Pride Month as we explore LGBTQIA+ representation in fiction, with Victoria L Humphreys discussing how LGBTQIA+ narratives are crafted, challenged and celebrated in contemporary writing.

Drawing on themes from her novel The Other Way, she reflects on how hidden histories and marginalised identities shape the stories we tell.

The session includes a Q&A with opportunity for audience questions:

🎬 Pride Month at World Cinema Club

For Pride Month we’ve picked out four LGBTQ+ films from the LibrariesWest catalogue that we were excited to share. The films come from four different countries and tell very different stories, but each offers a different perspective on relationships, identity, and belonging.

• Portrait of a Lady on Fire
A French drama about a painter commissioned to create a portrait on a remote island. Gentle, beautifully shot and one of the most acclaimed French films of recent years.

• And Then We Danced
A Georgian coming-of-age story following a young dancer trying to find his place within a traditional dance group. A thoughtful film about friendship, ambition, and the pressures of deciding who you want to be.

• Rurangi
A New Zealand drama about a transgender activist returning to his hometown after years away. A film about family, community, and reconnecting with people from your past.

• End of the Century
An Argentine drama about two men meeting in Barcelona and spending a day talking about relationships and the past. A quiet, reflective film built around conversation, memory, and chance encounters.

All of these are available through LibrariesWest.

If you’ve seen any of these, or have other LGBTQ+ film recommendations, feel free to leave a comment below. We’d love to hear what people have been watching.

If you’re in Dorchester this month, 🏳️‍🌈 Pop-Up Pride Dorchester also has events and exhibitions happening around the town. We’ll add links in the first comment.

For more World Cinema Club posts and film recommendations, we’ll also link the main welcome post in the comments, or you can search on the Dorchester Library page.

📚 It’s time for our next staff recommendation!

This week’s pick goes to… Charm from the Crave series by Tracy Wolff

Why we recommend it:
"Even though this series has a teen sticker, don’t let that discourage you — it’s an amazingly written YA fantasy series. 📚✨
These page‑turning books will keep you wanting more, with each one leaving you eager for the next."
