Dorset Hedgehog Rescue

Dorset Hedgehog Rescue Dorset Hedgehog Rescue is the new name for Hamworthy Hedgehog Rescue. Registered charity number 1186680.
(1)

We are a small registered charity that works 24/7, 365 days a year to rescue, rehabilitate and release our native wild hedgehogs. Based at our home in Poole, Dorset, we help sick, injured and orphaned wild hedgehogs back to full health with the aim of eventually releasing them back to the wild, or appropriate protected sites.

Two of our mums with their hoglets that were born in the rescue. Shirley's hoglets were born on 26th May, and Connie's were born on 22nd May.

We have several more mums and babies, but they are still too young to risk disturbing them.

Take a close look at this photo - it is not two hedgehogs, but one large adult male that has been caught up in nylon strapping on a building site. The strapping is so tight that his mid section looks like two hedgehogs side by side.

He had pop-off syndrome, which we were able to resolve, and a badly bruised abdomen. He is on fluid therapy and pain relief, and is being kept in one of our ICU's for now as he was freezing cold.

Many thanks to Julian, who found and released the hog from the strapping and called us for help.

It's volunteer week this week, so I thought I'd give a special mention to one of our stalwart supporters, Gary Piper.

As well as being a Poole Pirate, a member of the English Civil War Society, and a distinguished gentleman rider, Gary spends a lot of his spare time here at the rescue centre carrying out maintenance work, putting flat pack furniture together, assembling outdoor pens and being a general dogs body.

Thank you Gary, we couldn't do it without people like you.

Well, it's certainly baby time with the hoglets coming thick and fast. We have 5 litters that have been born in the rescue this week and lots of orphans coming in as well.

Two nests have been dug out by dogs, one nest found in a compost heap while compost was being taken out to use in the garden. One litter was found near a road, possibly looking for mum that had failed to return, and hunger has driven them from the nest to look for her.

Sadly only one litter has come in with their mum, so the others are all being hand reared.

We have every stage of hoglets, from neonates with eyes and ears still closed to semi-dependent juveniles that are starting to wean, so our foster mums (Kay & Tracy) are being kept very busy.

Not including the hoglets we have had 87 new entries to the rescue this month, so our lovely volunteers are being kept busy too - thank you all for your time and for caring for the hedgehogs.

We had a visit from members of Sherborne Help4Hedgehogs Group yesterday. Ginni, Deana and Marion Presented us with £750 from funds they have raised by baking and selling cakes, and making and selling hedgehog houses and feeding stations.

Thank you for your support which is much appreciated.

Please remember to leave out a bowl of fresh water for wildlife in this hot weather. We are getting a lot of severely dehydrated hogs in at the moment where they have not been able to find enough water.

Dehydration is a potentially life-threatening condition. It's the result of not drinking enough water and electrolytes or losing too much fluid. It requires immediate attention. If left untreated dehydration can cause serious organ damage and even death.
