I always get strange looks when I take my learners on a motorway, and often get told by my learners Iโm not allowed, so letโs clear it all up.
In 2018 the DVSA changed regulations allowing learner drivers onto motorway as long as:
๐ they are accompanied by an approved driving instructor
๐ they are driving a car fitted with dual controls displaying an โLโ
๐ their instructor believes they are competent and ready
No learner is forced onto a motorway, and no instructor is required to offer them. The decision is based on the learner's ability, confidence and readiness.
By the time a learner reaches the motorway, they should already have good control of the vehicle, be capable of driving independently and have demonstrated safe decision making on a variety of roads.
Motorways bring anxiety to students and parents alike, so letโs take the fear away for everyone and learn how to use them safely. All my students where possible take a least 1 motorway lesson before test. If Iโm sharing the roads with you, I want you to be safe and capable where ever you drive.
