This project, located in Wellington, was completed last year for The National Trust. It is one of the oldest greenhouses in the country, and one of only two known examples of its kind, built by R Halliday & Co. It was upgraded to a grade 1 listed building whilst the restoration was being carried out.

The brickwork restoration comprised of rebuilding approximately 25% of the brickwork which had either subsided or perished, and a full repoint internally and externally using lime mortar.

Each brick had to be numbered and re-laid exactly how it was built 133 years ago.
A total of 5 repointing samples were then made, and 3 members of the national trust had to decide which style the whole building was repointed in. It was such an amazing experience for me and the team, and one which has given this old building a new lease of life.

This is a pair of stone chimney's that we sand blasted, took apart, installed full lead trays and then rebuilt using lime mortar. We installed new liners and pots and capped with concrete for longevity. They were 140 years old and should last another 140! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

This raised patio with steps was first built using blocks, then the sides cladded in 20mm slate. The rest of the slate was laid to three different falls to compliment and work with the steps.
Existing cobbles were then removed and relaid to work with the new slate, then new topsoil and turf was laid to finish off the project.

Excuse the bad angle and the shadows but check out this video showing the process of repointing using lime mortar. This section took me about 45 minutes but lucky for you I have sped it up. Also share away ๐Ÿ‘ thanks.

Finally working on the last elevation of this Victorian house. The brickwork on the sides and rear of Victorian houses tended to be different to the fronts. The faรงade (front) of these properties tended to have smaller joints, using larger bricks with sharp corners and are usually a red engineering type brick. This was a way to show off your wealth. The smaller the joints on the brickwork the wealthier you were, with it needing a fine bricklayer to build a house with thinner joints.

Small rebuild of a barn corner, using reclaimed bricks and lime and infilling the stone. The door also needed to be made smaller to house a long window, so I toothed out the the left jamb and rebuilt it bigger, leaving it central to the arch.

After experiencing damp problems inside, we came to the conclusion that the many layers of non breathable paint were holding water and allowing water to sit between the paint and brick. The wall was also not breathing and moisture was escaping the only place it could, inside the property.
After removing the paint then raking out the joints, we repointed the wall using a semi strong lime mortar.

This old chimney had a tree growing out of the top and mismatched pots. After replacing a few bricks and the fitting the new pot, I flaunched the top giving it quite a few more years of life.

Chimney rebuild and repoint. This brickwork had been raked out and pointed back in using sand and cement probably not that long ago! This had let moisture to get behind the cement pointing causing the faces of the bricks to "blow".
It has now been repointed in lime premixed mortar bought from the client from Lime Green.
