Unlike many songbirds, sparrows depend on us. They nest in tiny gaps in roofs, walls, and old buildings. The kind of spaces modern homes no longer have.

As we renovate, insulate, and seal every crack, their homes disappear. They return each season… only to find nothing left.

No nesting spot means no chicks. And slowly, quietly, entire colonies fade away.

Since the 1980s, sparrow numbers in parts of Europe have dropped dramatically. The truth is uncomfortable: in trying to modernize our world, we’ve made it unlivable for them.

The good news? Small changes help. Nest boxes, bird-friendly plants, even leaving a few natural spaces can make a difference.

Sometimes, saving wildlife starts with simply making room.
