Here’s how handy and friendly LastContact is to use!
It helps you to find a phone signal when you are off the beaten track and is the perfect solution when you are out and about 📶

In this post I want to show you an example of a good phone signal all the way along this trail, which means that had we needed to call for help, we wouldn’t have had a problem.

In lots of places, this isn’t the case.

We did part of the “Usk Valley Walk” to see something a bit unusual — an oxbow lake 🐟🦢🦆🚣‍♂️

Most of the year, it’s not a lake at all. But after all the rain we’ve had recently, the River Usk is high enough to flood the channel that it used to run through.

No phone signal at all at Neist Point‼️
[As you can see in the first two photos]
You’re going to have to drive a good three miles back up that single track road before you can post your sunset pics to Insta 😄

And trust me, with sunsets like these, with the sun going down over the Outer Hebrides, you’ll want to share your photos.

The screenshots that I’ve shared here, are from the app that I made — LastContact.
An app that helps you to find a phone signal when you are off the beaten track 📶

Did you know that LastContact beeps and boops at you ⁉️
It’s simple and clever and you don’t need to think too much while you are hiking.

Your phone is in your pocket – just notice when it beeps – that means you’ve lost signal.

It makes it easier to work your way back to where you had a signal if you need to (to call for help, check in with somebody, or whatever). ☎️

“Oh yeah, I remember it beeped just after we climbed over that stile a few minutes back.”

And if the sounds get annoying, you can always turn them off 😄

This place was NOT what I was expecting at all‼️

I thought we were in for a pleasant walk in the forest (which you can get anywhere in the Forest of Dean without having to pay to get in) and some activities aimed at little kids. 🐴🐑🐇

But no! Puzzlewood was actually spectacular! 🌳

I can definitely see why they chose it as a location for filming Star Wars and Harry Potter! 🎬

The last photo shows that we had a pretty good phone reception almost everywhere in the wood, except for a few places where the high rock formations blocked the signal. 📶

If you’re ever in the area, you should definitely check it out 👍🏻

Has this ever happened to you? You open your maps app, but you haven’t got a signal 🤦🏻‍♂️ 📶

If so, chances are it looked something like the first photo. (That’s East Anglia if you didn’t recognise it 😜.)

That’s why I added the ability to download maps to LastContact!

In the second photo ➡️ you can see the maps I’ve downloaded to my phone.
And the last three photos show what a downloaded map looks like, even with **no phone signal** ‼️

Perfect for helping you find a phone signal when you don’t have one!

Just don’t forget to download the map before you head out into the wilds! 🏔

Have a great walking weekend 🥾

The Forest of Dean is a wonderful place 🌳

➡️ Swipe all the way to the right to see a screenshot from LastContact 📶. There wasn’t any signal data on the map yet, but as you can see, just the points we added while we were there would have been enough to find the last place we had a signal if we had run into trouble.

Back in November, we went looking for some of the ancient trees that you can find in various spots around the forest.

Many of them have been catalogued and you can find a downloadable PDF with a map showing where to find them. (Just Google “foresters forest” and “ancient and notable trees”.)

This is a stand of ancient oaks thought to be from the 17th century! 🌳

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.” ☔️🌧

It rains a lot here in Wales, but you can’t let a bit of rain stop you, right?
You’ve just got to dress right and get out there!

And if you’re already dressed for the wet, why not go somewhere you’re almost guaranteed to get soaked?
😅

Henrhyd Falls is easy to get to and is only a short walk from the car park. It’s one of my favourites, because you can go behind the falls. It’s pretty safe, but can be a bit slippery.

And the wetter the weather, the better, as you’ll get more water coming down.

➡️ Swipe to the third photo to see a screenshot from LastContact, which shows that mobile reception at the falls is pretty good.

A few photos from a walk we did up on Llangattock Escarpment back in the autumn 🍂.

It was a sunny, showery day, and we were escorted by rainbows the whole way.

It’s a great walk in autumn – there were SO MANY mushrooms 🍄!

Mobile reception was pretty good most of the time (the cyan dots in the last image, a screenshot from LastContact, show where I had a signal and the magenta ones where I didn’t), as the escarpment overlooks the town of Crickhowell and the busy A40.

Hi everyone and welcome to LastContact 📶
Let me introduce myself and my app 🙋‍♂️

My name is Martin and I live in Wales.
By day, I work in IT, and on the weekends I love to go hiking with my family 🏔🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🚶

During my walks in the Welsh mountains, I’ve noticed that there are lots of places with no phone signal. This can be a bit of a problem if you get into trouble and need to call for help.

That’s why I created LastContact.
It’s a crowd-sourced mapping app that helps you find a phone signal. It collects signal data from everyone who uses the app and shows it on a map.

The app and using it is very simple.
The green and red dots are shared data so EVERYONE can see and use it.
🟢 Green means there is a signal.
🔴 Red means there isn’t.

The cyan and magenta dots show YOUR signal data since you opened the app.
🔵 Cyan for signal.
🟣 Magenta for no signal.

The more people who use the app, the more useful it becomes.

Bottom line — wherever you go (UK only at the moment) you can see where you have been and where you did and didn’t have a signal.
This means you can see how far you need to back-track to get to a place with reception 📶

⭐️The app is available in the Apple App Store⭐️
(See link in bio)

I hope you will all find it useful and if you have any questions about the app (or recommended hikes) please drop me a DM 👍🏻

Happy trails,
Martin
