Battle of the Somme. Service to be held at Cheadle War Memorial Wed 01 July at 07:30. Please contact Councillor Mike Newman for any further details.

On 1st July 1916 at precisely 7.30am, tens of thousands of British soldiers went ‘over the top’ at the start of the Battle of the Somme, which was actually a series of battles lasting until 18th November.

By the end of the day there had been 57,470 casualties, of which 19,240 were killed, including six men from Cheadle.

To mark the 110th anniversary of the battle, a short service is to be held at Cheadle War Memorial on Wednesday 1st July at 7.30am. (Please gather by 7.25am).

This week I had chance to attend and listen to industry experts on where localised services can be improved, to bring quality of care closer to our neighbourhoods. My support for joined up approach between secondary and primary care has grown further, having spoken to local residents who’ve shared the challenges they experience.

Help ensure the GMC's “five-year rule” is scrapped as it currently stops some perpetrators of sexual assault in the NHS from being investigated.

Safeguarding is an important and key pillar in healthcare, so any scenario that poses a risk to this should be reviewed. It’s something I am extremely passionate about as an NHS employee myself.

Ending this historic and outdated ruling brings the General Medical Council (GMC) into a modern framework allowing historic allegations, particularly sexual abuse or serious misconduct to be investigated. I’ve spoke to Clinical staff and they agree having a ‘fitness to practice’ is positive change and could provide more protection and better education.

As we finish the month, I’m reflecting back on the amazing end to the 2026 campaign. These photos are a snippet of my closest and dearest on 07 May Local Election Day. Those who’ve stood by me throughout, I cannot thank you enough, especially, times I was sad, the times when it was tough, the times when I was alone. Campaigning all year round isn’t easy, but you do it because you’re passionate about making change, and you’re doing it for the people you serve. No ego. No hidden agenda. But for all the difficult days there were SO MANY amazing days, that brought laughter, and hope it was my sheer enthusiasm that played a part to the excitement of the campaign. We really did “Shaikh_Things_Up” 🔸🔸🔸

Our Moya Cole Hospice, is extremely close to our family. My wife’s grandad John Kemp, lifelong Heald Green resident, speaks fondly of his time volunteering at Moya Cole Charity shop, Finney Lane, and of the many years formerly known as St Anne’s Hospice. As a retired 87 year old he still helps three times a week and enjoys giving back time. A true inspiration to us all.

Hospices play a vital role in our communities, but more needs to be done to raise their profile, with greater recognition and stronger government funding for palliative care, to ensure everyone who needs it can access compassionate, high-quality support.
