πŸ”΄βš«οΈ CRFC - Levelled Up β˜οΈπŸ”΄βš«οΈ

Carrickfergus RFC is delighted to announce the completion of the final project funded through the Levelling Up Fund grant.

The first phase of the funding saw the successful upgrade of the LED floodlighting on Pitch 2 in 2024. In 2025, an accessible pathway was installed at Pitch 1, alongside the provision of new substitute benches for both teams.

This week, the final stage of the project was completed with the installation of 42 solar panels and supporting battery storage systems. This significant investment will substantially reduce the club’s running costs while further enhancing its environmental sustainability. Combined with the LED floodlighting upgrade, the project represents a major step forward in reducing the club’s carbon footprint and improving the long-term sustainability of our facilities.

The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Cheryl Brownlee MLA and Councillor Marc Collins for their support and assistance throughout these projects. We would also like to thank Matthew Holmes from Ulster Rugby for his guidance and expertise, which have been invaluable in bringing these initiatives to a successful conclusion.

These improvements will benefit our members, players, volunteers and the wider community for many years to come, and we are proud to have delivered projects that support both accessibility and environmental responsibility at Carrickfergus RFC.

βš«οΈπŸ”΄ Revealing our new coaching and management team for the 3rd XV πŸ”΄βš«οΈ

We’re delighted to welcome club legend Billy Montgomery back into the senior setup.

Following a successful playing career, Billy has coached across all sections of the Club over the years, and it’s massive to have his rugby IQ and influence back within the senior ranks.

Joining Billy in the backroom team is another club legend, his brother Geoffrey β€œFlaff” Montgomery. Flaff needs little introduction after an incredible 12-year stint as 1st XV Manager, only stepping down for a well-earned semi-retirement this year.

Completing the team is Gavin McIlveen, often seen alongside Billy sharing rugby knowledge and experience. Gavin has followed his son Adam through the age groups, and it’s brilliant to see parents stepping into more established roles within the Club.

The 3rd XV is our Academy side - built around a core of experienced former 1st/2nd XV players alongside some of our most promising young talent. It provides the perfect platform for players stepping up from youth rugby or returning to the game, with a clear pathway into the senior squad under Billy and his team.

A big thank you to Glen McCord and Glen Graham for their leadership and commitment to the squad over the past number of years, as they continue to contribute in other key roles within the Club.

We’re excited for what lies ahead for the 3rd XV this season πŸ‘

πŸ”΄βš«οΈ Revealing our new coaching and management team for the 2nd XV πŸ”΄βš«οΈ

Leading the way for the 2nd XV is Ross Marsden. A true club legend, Ross was still playing at the top level right up until last season and brings a huge amount of experience, standards and leadership to the role. His knowledge of the game and understanding of what it takes to compete will be invaluable for the squad this year.

Joining Ross is another familiar face in Chris Rodgers, better known as β€œFridge”. After an incredible playing career with the 1st XV, Fridge is taking a step back from playing duties to move into a player-coach role and assist Ross with the squad. His experience and presence around the group will be massive both on and off the pitch.

Keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes is Bill Crymble. A former Club President on several occasions and a true club stalwart, Bill effectively manages all team affairs and continues to give an incredible amount of time and effort to the Club.

The 2nd XV remains a hugely important part of our senior setup - providing competitive rugby, developing players pushing for 1st XV opportunities, and maintaining the strong standards and culture of the Club throughout the squad.

Thanks to Andy McKeen and Matt McDowell for their prior commitment to the squad, who are stepping away from the coaching sidelines next season - they have helped set the 2nd XV up for the seasons to come

Exciting times ahead for the 2nd XV this season πŸ‘
