The Gateway Garden has so many positive stories to tell, of people in our community coming together to grow food, supporting biodiversity, meeting new people and learning new skills. Everyone is welcome and all we ask is that people are respectful of the space and each other.
So it is with great reluctance that we have to share that a very small minority, and sadly we do know it is only a handful of young people, within our community, are damaging the garden and its ethos. With vandalism and verbal abuse to its users, this should not be tolerated.
Please, if you have young people in your family, talk to them about the impact this has on those who are working to make a space we can all enjoy. About the impact damaging something that young and old have sown and nurtured. About valuing the diversity of the wee toon.
Last Tuesday when we arrived at the garden we discovered the Campbeltown Nursery Centre children’s pumpkins had been picked and smashed up around the garden and seating area. The plants ripped up and destroyed.
We have young people in our community who help in the garden, the Campbeltown Grammar School has a bed in the garden. Thank you to them for the valuable contribution they have made. They are a credit to their families and the town. We welcome any young person who would like to learn a new skill or become involved. This is your space too.
Let’s not allow the few to ruin it for all.
