Petition Calling on the County Council to Get a Grip of the Road Maintenance Contracts to Improve the Terrible State of our Roads

"First, be aware that Cambridgeshire roads are in a shocking state with the greatest number of potholes per mile according to the most recent survey by GoCompare. The County Council’s road maintenance regime was recently rated Amber by the Department of Transport and this was a narrow miss of being flagged as Red.

Second, be aware that residents frequently say that although pot holes have been filled, they soon open up again. There is a widespread view that taxpayers’ money is not being used wisely.

We therefore call on the County Council to get a grip of the road maintenance contracts to improve the quality monitoring and consequences for the contractor of sub-standard work.

We further call on the County Council to ensure that the contractors operate under a transparent regime which provides council tax payers with value for money and which delivers high-quality road maintenance as standard."

Full Council today - the Labour group had two successful motions:

1. Prioritising works installing essential safety upgrades at the Humphries Way junction at Milton (Cllr Meschini)
2. Supporting co-operative models of service provision and running a pilot to see whether suppliers abide by the Fair Tax Mark standards and living wage (Cllr Alex Bulat)

Unfortunately, we could not support the amended motion Cllr Goodliffe put forward, as the Lib Dems chose to blame the Labour Government instead of taking responsibility over their own budget decisions. We are waiting for our FOI requests to share the correspondence between the county council and DWP on the use of the Crisis and Resilience Fund, and the administration will no doubt get an answer to the letter to the Minister they voted to send. Hopefully this will finally settle this matter. Until then, we will continue to challenge inaccurate claims in their Focus leaflets and fake newspapers.

Our Labour group also voted in favour of the Lib Dem motion to support Huntingdon and St Neots in their bids for town of culture 2028.

And we voted against a Lib Dem motion which simply opposes and asked for no more than a letter to Government on the police white paper reforms - which are under consultation.

Today, the Labour group passed a motion at full council asking the Liberal Democrat administration to prioritise works installing essential safety upgrades at the Humphries Way junction at Milton.

We will continue to apply pressure so this stays at the top of the agenda and residents no longer have to live with the danger and risk of collision that they are having to put up with now.

🔶 Received a Lib Dem leaflet delivered by post claiming Labour is "stealing" free school meal vouchers...❌ This is not true - here's why.

✅ The Household Support fund was not a "free school meal voucher fund" - it was the choice of the council (with Labour under the previous joint administration) to use it for this.
✅ The Household Support Fund is replaced with a bigger, and multi-year Crisis and Resilience fund by the Labour Government. (5.35m starting from April)
✅ The Minister in charge already confirmed that councils CAN use the new fund to continue voucher schemes if they so choose. We shared this confirmation with the administration, but they choose to stick to their Focus political line.

🔶 The Lib Dems made a political choice to cut free school meals in their vouchers. They only U-turned to fund vouchers after opposition pointed out - the money they "found" to keep the scheme til the autumn includes Crisis and Resilience Fund cash (which they previously claimed cannot be used at all for vouchers).

❗️Campkin Road Cambridge

This kind of thing happens far too often in the County Council's Highways department and it is very disappointing to see it happen yet again. This road in Cambridge has been in the capital programme for resurfacing since 2024. The works have been delayed every year since.

"We have been made aware by CCC Streetworks..." shows a remarkable inability of the right hand to know what the left hand is doing, and residents have to pay the price for this lack of proper planning and organisation.

We call on the County Council to undertake better basic monitoring of its own operations.

We now have the receipts.

The Lib Dem County administration claimed during the full council budget debate that they cannot use the new, larger and multi-year Crisis and Resilience Fund to continue free school meal vouchers.

This is not true. As the answer from DWP to Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner shows, there is nothing that prohibits the fund being used for this scheme.

Read the letter from Cllr Bryony Goodliffe, Labour spokesperson for children and young people, below (with the evidence).

Our Labour group submitted a motion for the next full council to set the record straight.

Statement: LABOUR CALL FOR COUNTY TO WITHDRAW TRUSTATRADER JIBE AND REINSTATE CAMBS CHARITY HANDYPERSON SERVICE

Following news today (Thursday 12 February) there had been no consultation with Age UK - Cambridgeshire and Peterborough over this week's Lib Dem-run Cambridgeshire County Council decision to cut all funding to the charity's handyperson service, Labour is calling for consultation to take place and the cut to be reversed.

Labour's Spokesperson on Adult Social Care and Public Health at the County Council, Cllr Richard Howitt commented:

"This is a service which provides grab rails to help people to be able to have a bath at home, key safes so carers can get access to the house and fire alarms and other vital home safety measures, so it makes a real and practical difference to more than 2,000 Cambridgeshire residents per year who need it.

"Only last June, County officers said that for every £1 invested in the service, the work saves £7.50 to the Council in preventing falls and promoting independence. The new Lib Dem Chair of Committee called it 'an extremely prudent use of Council funds'.

"What has changed?

"Furthermore, the official Council statement saying elderly and disabled residents should use TrustATrader instead to undertake what is specialist work, is an insult to a charity as renown and trusted as Age UK and potentially puts vulnerable residents at risk.

"The County Council should withdraw and apologise for its statement, then reverse the cut altogether."

🍎Save free school meal vouchers + 💙Investment in more in-house services.

📰The council budget isn’t just a spreadsheet. It’s a statement of priorities.

⚖️Outside statutory services, all investments - or lack thereof - are political choices.

👍We had the best settlement from Central Government - and the first multi-year one. More money for highways, more grants, more money for tackling poverty.

🙏Our Labour Group proposed an amendment at full council today.

👎Sadly, the Lib Dem majority voted against our funded proposal to continue free school meals during holidays or any of our other amendments for better in-house provision in children's services, restoring newspaper access for main libraries, or continuing our migration and partnerships work.

SAVE SCHOOL MEAL HOLIDAY VOUCHERS

At today's meeting of the Strategy, Resources and Performance committee, the Lib Dem administration voted to recommend a budget to full council which includes a total cessation of our free school meal holiday voucher scheme from 1st September 2026.

Cllr Elisa Meschini, who attended the meeting for Labour, says: "I remain absolutely at a loss. This is the very first business plan of this Lib Dem administration, within the context of an ongoing cost of living crisis and the most generous local government financial settlement since Labour last left office in 2010, and the first thing they do is cut financial support for the most vulnerable in our county?

"As the Labour group will prove on the 10th of February, the Labour government has provided enough money to continue the free school meal holiday voucher scheme not just for the upcoming financial year but for the next three. Cutting this lifeline is a choice, and one we encourage the Lib Dem administration to rethink before it's too late.

"We are asking residents who back our campaign to sign our petition at
https://survey.labour.org.uk/freeholidaymeals
and make their voice heard. We will fight this all the way."
